What an OEM number actually encodes
A genuine part number is not a random serial. Each manufacturer group runs its own numbering house style, and once you can read it, the number tells you something before you ever open a catalog. A Volkswagen Group number such as 1K0 615 301 AB breaks into a car line, an assembly group, the part inside that group, and a revision index. The 615 in the middle means brakes on every VAG car ever built to that scheme.
That is why a parts advisor can glance at a number and say "that is a Toyota part" without looking anything up. Five digits, a hyphen, five digits is Toyota. Eleven unbroken digits is BMW or Porsche. A letter followed by ten digits is Mercedes-Benz. This tool encodes 29 of those house formats, 14 of which are distinctive enough to identify a group on their own.
Why one number can match several manufacturers
Some shapes are shared. Eight plain digits with no separators is the format used by General Motors, by Fiat and Alfa Romeo, by Volvo and by SAIC. Nothing in the number itself resolves that ambiguity, so the honest answer is a list rather than a single name. The context usually settles it: you know roughly what the car is, or the invoice says.
The reverse trap is more expensive. A number that looks like a valid OEM reference can still be a supplier casting number stamped on the same part. Bosch, Valeo, Denso, Sachs and the rest all number their own output, and those numbers appear on genuine parts alongside the carmaker reference. If a number does not match any house format here, that is the usual explanation.

From a number to the right part
Identifying the manufacturer is the first step of two. The second is checking the number against the specific vehicle, because a single reference often covers several models while a single model may take three variants of the same component depending on build date, market or an option code the customer has never heard of.
That check is what the official catalogs are for. Enter the VIN, open the assembly diagram, and confirm the number the factory lists for that car. If the number you started with is superseded, the catalog shows you what replaced it, which is the part you should actually be ordering.

Can you tell me the exact car from a part number?
No tool can do that reliably from the number alone, and any that claims to is guessing. The format tells you which manufacturer group issued the number and which catalog to search. Going from there to a specific vehicle needs the catalog itself, because one number often fits many models and one model takes many variants of the same part.
Why does my number match more than one manufacturer?
Several groups use the same shape. Eight plain digits, for example, are used by General Motors, Fiat, Volvo and SAIC alike. This tool shows every family the number could belong to instead of picking one and sounding confident about it.
What if nothing matches?
Three common reasons: the number is an aftermarket or supplier reference rather than an OEM number, it belongs to a manufacturer outside the formats listed here, or a character was mistyped. Supplier numbers from Bosch, Valeo or Denso follow their own systems and will not match a carmaker format.
Is the part number on my old part the OEM number?
Not always. Parts often carry the supplier casting number as well as, or instead of, the carmaker number. If the number on the part does not match any OEM format, it is usually the supplier reference, and the OEM number has to come from the catalog by VIN.
Does a matching format mean the part is genuine?
No. Counterfeiters copy number formats. A format check confirms the number is plausible for that manufacturer, nothing more. Genuine origin is established by the supply chain and by the security markings on the packaging.
