Three relationships, one word
The confusion is worth unpicking because the three have different levels of authority behind them.
A supersession is the manufacturer saying this number replaced that one. It is the strongest relationship there is, because it comes from the factory and it is recorded in the catalog. An OE-supplier equivalent is the company that made the part for the production line selling the same component under its own label. Strong, but it is the supplier speaking rather than the vehicle manufacturer. The check that settles it
Open both applications in the catalog and compare the exploded diagrams rather than the photographs. The diagram shows mounting points, the fixings that go with the part, and the quantity the assembly uses. Two components can be visually identical and differ by a bracket, a bolt pattern or a seal.
Then look at the applicability notes beside the parts list. They read like footnotes and they are where the manufacturer limits a part to certain build dates, markets or option codes. That is usually where an apparently clean interchange turns out to have a condition attached.
When interchange is the right answer
None of this is an argument for always buying genuine. Interchange used properly saves real money and gets cars back on the road when the dealer number is on backorder.
