There are quick ways to guess a part number and one reliable way to know it. For genuine parts, the dependable method is looking it up by VIN in an electronic parts catalog (EPC).
The reliable method, step by step
- Find the 17-character VIN (windscreen, door jamb, or documents)
- Enter it into an EPC to resolve the exact build
- Open the assembly group you need (e.g. front brakes)
- Read the OEM part number, quantity and any supersession
- Confirm the superseded (current) number before ordering
Common mistakes
Matching by model name alone ignores mid-year and market differences. Trusting an old number without checking supersessions leads to failed orders. Copying a number from a worn part can misread digits. The EPC removes all three risks.
