Gearbox Code by VIN: Identifying the Transmission Actually Fitted

Same engine, same year, two gearboxes

The engine gets the attention because it is the thing people quote down the phone, and once you have the engine code the rest of the enquiry usually opens up. The gearbox is the question that stays open after the engine is settled, and it is harder for a reason that has nothing to do with anyone being careless.

Manufacturers fit more than one transmission behind the same engine, in the same model year, in the same market. Output band decides some of it. Drive layout decides more, because a front drive and an all wheel drive version of one gearbox family are different units with different final drives and different mounting. Then there is the order form: a buyer specifying an automatic instead of a manual has changed the flywheel, the starter, the mounts, the driveshafts and the loom, all of it invisible from outside the car.

What follows the gearbox rather than the model name is a longer list than most people carry in their heads.

  • Fluid specification and fill quantity, which differ between a drain and a full change
  • The filter or strainer, the sump pan and its gasket, where one is fitted at all
  • Gearbox mounts, their brackets and the bolts, which are often single use
  • Speed, range and pressure sensors, and the connectors they plug into
  • The valve body or mechatronic unit, revised more often than the casing suggests
  • Torque converter, flexplate or flywheel and clutch hardware
  • Final drive ratio, and the driveshafts that follow it
  • Cooler, cooler lines and the thermostatic valve where the design uses one

The number on the box is often a torque rating, not a name

ZF's 8HP designation reads as an eight speed with a hydraulic converter and planetary gearsets. The number after HP tracks input torque, but it is an index rather than a specification you can multiply out. The 8HP45 is rated at 450 Nm and the second generation 8HP50 at 500 Nm, which fits the pattern. The 8HP51 is also rated at 500 Nm rather than the 510 the pattern implies. ZF's own product page gives the family a range of 220 to 1,000 Nm, which is the span the naming has to cover.

Mercedes-Benz builds its designations on a different principle again, a type number carried by the unit. The seven speed 7G-Tronic is type 722.9, and the nine speed 9G-Tronic released in 2013 is type 725.0.

That is worth understanding because a torque class is a different machine altogether. Two cars of the same model with different engine outputs can leave the factory with an 8HP45 and an 8HP70 and share very little inside. A supplier who says the car has a ZF eight speed has named the factory and stopped short of naming the part.

The same unit also travels under several names at once. Mopar's own transmission sales code chart lists DFR and DFV against the eight speed 8HP75 and DFW against the 8HP50, so a ZF unit reaches a Chrysler parts counter wearing a Mopar code. Traffic goes the other way too: the same chart lists sales code DGJ as a five speed automatic W5A580, which is a Mercedes-Benz model code sitting in a Chrysler product. Whoever built it, the parts list belongs to the specific unit fitted to the specific car.

Gearbox code, type number, option code, engine suffix: four vocabularies for one thing

Part of what makes this awkward is that the trade uses one phrase, and manufacturers use several systems that do not line up. Recognising which one you are looking at saves a lot of circling.

Volkswagen Group runs two identifiers at once. There is the letter code stamped on the box, and there is the parts code prefix that opens every part number for that unit: 0AM and 0CW for the DQ200, 02E and 0D9 for the DQ250. That prefix occupies the first block of the number, which is why a DQ250 part and a DQ200 part are separable before you read a word of the description. Ross-Tech's documentation describes the PR codes on the vehicle data label as covering everything from powertrain details, engine and transmission codes included, to the paint colour, and puts the label near the spare wheel well on the floor, with a duplicate on the first page of the service and maintenance record.

Mercedes-Benz uses a type number instead, and the series digits are part of the answer rather than decoration. A Mercedes enquiry runs on that number, and 722 and 725 are different families rather than two revisions of one. Ask for a gearbox code at a Mercedes counter and the conversation stalls until someone produces the type number.

General Motors folds it into the option system, on the Service Parts Identification label rather than loose in the glovebox. That label sits most often on the back of the glovebox door, inside the boot lid or under the spare wheel cover, and from 2017 a QR label on the driver's side B pillar took over the job. The transmission appears there as a three character RPO code, with four characters in rare cases. Mopar does the same with sales codes on the Body Code Plate, and its published chart tells technicians in plain terms to compare the codes on the plate against the list before choosing a replacement part.

Renault takes the fourth route and folds the transmission into the engine suffix. K9K 836 and K9K 837 are both the 110 hp 1.5 dCi, and published tables list 837 as the automatic gearbox configuration. Where the code is stamped, and why nobody can hand you one location

The code lives on the gearbox itself in one of a few forms. It may be cast or stamped into the casing, carried on a small riveted plate, or printed on a label stuck to a flat face. Start at the joint where the casing meets the engine, the top face where a torch reaches it, and the flat above the sump on units that have one, then stop guessing and open the documentation for that vehicle.

The exact position varies by manufacturer, and it varies within one manufacturer's range as well. Anyone who gives you a single location that covers a whole brand is generalising from the one car they have looked at. If the car is on the ground and the code is underneath, that is a ramp job rather than a guess.

The vehicle side records are frequently easier than the casing and they answer a different question, which is what the factory fitted. The Volkswagen data label, the GM Service Parts Identification label and the Mopar Body Code Plate all carry the transmission in some form. Mopar's chart is honest about the practical limit here: it refers the reader to the service manual for the plate's location and decoding, because there is no single answer.

Two things are not the code and get mistaken for it. A casting number identifies the casting, which is commonly shared across variants that take different internals, so it will get you close and then let you down. A sticker on a cover is worth very little, because covers get swapped during repairs and a dismantler fits whichever one is cleanest.

What a free decoder gives you, and where it stops

A free VIN decoder parses the seventeen characters and returns what the structure encodes: the manufacturer, the country, the model year, the plant, sometimes a body style. The gearbox is where the limit shows. NHTSA's public vPIC decoder carries fields called Transmission Style and Transmission Speeds, which sounds like the answer. Decoding a spread of ordinary vehicles against it on 28 August 2026, using the partial VIN patterns the service accepts so that anyone can repeat the check, what comes back is a class at best. A 2018 Toyota Prius, pattern JTDKARFU*J3, returns Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT) with the speed count left empty. A 2018 Jeep Compass, pattern 3C4NJDBB*JT, returns Manual/Standard and 6. A 2013 Ford F-150, pattern 1FTFW1ET*DF, comes back blank on both fields, and a 2011 BMW X3 does the same.

Both outcomes are the same problem. A six speed manual is a category of gearbox rather than a unit, and it names no part number and no fluid. What sits behind those columns is whatever each manufacturer chose to submit, so coverage varies by make and by year, and a blank is as likely as a value.

This is the difference worth being precise about. A decoder resolves a VIN to a family, which is the set of things the model was offered with. A manufacturer catalog resolves the VIN to the build record the factory wrote for that individual car, and returns the assembly that was actually bolted in, with its part numbers, the quantity used and the supersession chain behind each one. Family tells you what it might be. The build record tells you what it is.

Reading the gearbox back into a part number

Once the unit is settled, the shape of the numbers gives you a free sanity check on anything a supplier quotes. Volkswagen Group numbers run three characters for the car line, three for the main assembly group, three for the part within that group, then optional index letters for the revision, as in 1K0 615 301 AB. Because the middle block names the group, a gearbox part and a brake part off the same car look different in the middle three digits before you have read a word of the description.

Mopar numbers work differently again: eight digits with a two letter revision suffix that steps AA, AB, AC as the part is updated. If a supplier quotes you a number whose shape does not belong to the manufacturer you asked about, one of you has the wrong vehicle in mind, and that is a second of checking against a returned box.

Then follow the supersession chain to the number the factory ships today. Valve bodies, solenoids and control units get updated in service after field experience, so the supersession chain on a gearbox part is worth following to the end. When the box in the car is not the box the VIN describes

The VIN describes the car the factory built. It has no opinion about what happened afterwards. An exchange unit, a box out of a donor car or an owner's conversion all break the link, and on an older vehicle that is common enough to check for rather than assume against.

The sign is usually small. A gearbox code on the casing that does not match what the catalog returns, a fluid quantity that does not agree with the drain, a selector cable that has been adjusted oddly, a mount bracket that looks newer than everything around it. When the casing and the build record disagree, supply parts for the casing.

Buying a used or reconditioned unit runs into the same trap from the other side. A box advertised as fitting a model and year tells you very little, because the bellhousing pattern, the final drive ratio, the sensor set, the mounting points and the connector are all properties of the specific unit. Match on the code, ask the seller to photograph the plate or the stamping, and treat the model name as a rough filter. The check that takes two minutes before the quote goes out

The sequence that holds up is short enough to do while the customer is still on the phone. Put the VIN into the manufacturer catalog and read back the transmission it returns. If the car is on site, confirm it against the casing. Settle any disagreement before anything is ordered, because that is the only point at which it is free.

Then take the fluid specification and the fill quantity from the entry for that gearbox, along with the filter, the gasket, the seals and any hardware the catalog flags as used with the job. A drain and fill and a full service are different quantities on the same unit, and quoting one while doing the other is a familiar way to lose a morning.

One more question belongs at quoting time rather than at fitting time: whether anything on the list has to be coded or adapted after it goes in. Control units and adaptive transmissions frequently do, and finding out with the car apart is an expensive way to learn it.

The Volkswagen DQ200 and DQ250 are the everyday example: one dry clutch, one wet, taking different fluids in very different quantities.

What is the difference between a gearbox code and an option code?

A gearbox code names the unit directly, as Volkswagen Group does with its letter codes and internal type numbers. Does the gearbox code change the fluid?

Yes, and it is one of the more expensive places to get it wrong.
