Where the VIN stops and the plate begins
Decoding a VIN gets you a long way: the model, the engine, the market, the model year, the plant. For most mechanical parts that is enough, because the EPC reads the full VIN and resolves the exact build behind it. But there is a layer the VIN characters themselves do not spell out — the factory options fitted to that one car — and for paint, trim and optional equipment, that layer is where wrong-part orders come from.
That is what the data plate is for. Every manufacturer builds each car to an order, and it records that order somewhere on the vehicle: a sticker, a stamped plate, a code card. Learn to read it and you stop guessing at the things a photograph of the car cannot tell you.
What the data plate actually carries
The names differ by brand but the content rhymes. You are looking for a block of short codes, usually near the VIN plate, in the boot, on the B-pillar, under the bonnet, or inside the service booklet.
- Paint code — the factory colour, as a code, not a name (VW “LY7W”, a Mercedes “DB” number, a BMW colour code). “Silver” is not a part; the code is.
- Trim/interior code — upholstery colour and material, which drives seat, panel and carpet numbers.
- Option or equipment codes — the fitted extras: tow bar, sports suspension, larger brakes, headlight type, glass roof.
- Sometimes the transmission, axle ratio and build date, repeated in short form.
Option codes are how the factory really built the car
Each maker has its own option-code system, and it pays to recognise the one in front of you. Volkswagen Group cars carry PR codes — three-character strings, dozens of them, each naming one fitted option (a brake package, a suspension variant, a particular headlight). BMW uses three-digit option numbers. Mercedes prints a code card. General Motors stamps RPO codes in the glovebox. Different alphabets, same idea: a compact record of what was actually bolted on.
These codes matter because two cars with an identical VIN pattern can diverge on exactly the parts people get wrong. The classic example is brakes: the same model, same engine, can leave the factory with two different disc diameters depending on a single brake-package option code. The VIN narrows it; the option code settles it.
Reading paint and interior codes for body and trim
Body and collision work lives or dies on the paint code. A bumper cover, a mirror cap, a door — anything colour-keyed — has to be quoted against the factory paint code, never the colour name the customer uses. Two model years of “the same” metallic grey can be different codes and different mixing formulas. Pull the code off the plate, match it in the catalog and on the paint system, and the panel arrives right.
Interior trim behaves the same way. Seat covers, door cards, carpets and pillar trims split by the interior code. A parts advisor who reads that code once, at the start, avoids the slow, expensive game of ordering a black panel that turns out to be anthracite.
Using the plate together with the VIN in the catalog
The workflow that never lets you down is simple: resolve the VIN in the official EPC to get the exact build, then use the option and paint codes to choose between the variants the catalog offers. The EPC shows you which assemblies fit that build; the codes tell you which option branch is yours when the catalog splits — “with tow prep” versus “without”, “sports brakes” versus “standard”, this paint versus that.
This is also why official manufacturer data matters here. The link between an option code and the parts it implies is factory logic, maintained in the same system the plant used to build the car. A scraped third-party copy often loses that link first, leaving you to guess at the very split the code was meant to resolve.
When the plate and the catalog seem to disagree
Occasionally the plate lists an option the catalog does not seem to reflect, or the reverse. Before you second-guess the data, check the obvious: a repainted panel may carry a colour that no longer matches the plate, and a previous repair may have fitted a non-original part. The plate records how the factory built the car; it cannot know what happened afterwards.
When the car is standard and unmodified, trust the sequence — VIN for the build, codes for the options, official catalog for the numbers — and the part matches the specification, not just the model.
