How to look up SEAT parts by VIN

Cupra goes through the same six steps.

• 1. Read the VIN from the car. VSS at the start is the manufacturer code for SEAT and Cupra. Check the model year with the free decoder at /vin-decoder/.
• 2. Open the SEAT catalog on VINsearch, which is ETKA, and enter the VIN.
• 3. ETKA opens the vehicle record. Verify engine, gearbox, drive and equipment before choosing a diagram.
• 4. Open the main group, from 1 for engine to 9 for electrics, and find the part on the diagram.
• 5. Read the number with its index letters and follow the supersession to the current one, checking any application conditions.
• 6. Match it to the old part. Where left and right parts differ, the last digit before the index letters tells them apart, odd for left and even for right.

Group cars with SEAT and Cupra badges

The Ateca is built at Kvasiny in the Czech Republic next to the Škoda Karoq, on the MQB A1 platform. The Tarraco, 2018 to 2024, came off the line at Wolfsburg beside the Volkswagen Tiguan, shared its mechanical base with the Tiguan and the Škoda Kodiaq, and used the door panels of the Tiguan Allspace. The Cupra Born is an MEB car built at Zwickau, the plant that builds the Volkswagen ID.3.

That is why ETKA hands you numbers that open with another model’s code. In the group’s layout the first characters name the model a part was first developed for, and a part carried over to another car keeps them. On a SEAT, a prefix from another group model is no reason to doubt the number.

The Exeo and the first Alhambra

Two older SEATs catch people out. The Exeo, 2008 to 2014, is an Audi A4 of the B7 generation with SEAT styling front and rear. Its engines sit lengthways, where the rest of the SEAT range mounted them across the car, and the A4 B7 assembly line moved from Ingolstadt to Martorell to build it. For mechanical parts, think Audi.

The first Alhambra, 1996 to 2010, was built in Palmela, Portugal, on the same line as the Volkswagen Sharan and, until 2006, the Ford Galaxy. The second, 2010 to 2020, is a Sharan twin. On either, the VIN is what tells the catalog which one you mean.

Cupra: a trim that became a brand

Cupra was the name of SEAT’s performance versions from 1996, and by 2017 it survived only on the fast León. In January 2018 it became a brand of its own, starting with the Cupra Ateca that October. So a “León Cupra” on an older invoice is a SEAT, and a Cupra León is the León sold under the new badge.

The Formentor, built since September 2020, was the first model sold only as a Cupra. It shares MQB Evo with the fourth-generation León and runs from a 1.5 TSI to the 2.5-litre five-cylinder of the VZ5, with plug-in hybrids alongside. With that spread, the name tells you little about brakes or cooling. The VIN tells you the engine.
