A VIN encodes the manufacturer, the vehicle attributes, a check digit, the model year, the plant and the serial. Colour is not in there, because colour is an order option rather than a structural property. Two cars off the same line on the same day can share almost everything and differ only in paint.

What the VIN does do is point at the build record. The manufacturer knows exactly which paint left the booth on that body, and the official catalog reads that record. So the practical answer to "can I get the paint code from the VIN" is yes through the system, no by decoding the characters yourself. Any site that claims to decode the colour directly from the VIN string is guessing from model patterns.

Where the code physically lives, by brand

Most manufacturers print the paint code on the same identification sticker that carries the VIN and the tyre pressures, but the position varies more than you would expect.

Volkswagen, Audi, Skoda and SEAT traditionally use a sticker in the spare wheel well or on the service book, with a code like LC9X or LY9B alongside the option codes. BMW usually puts it on the strut tower under the bonnet or on the door jamb, printed as a three-digit number followed by the marketing name, for example 475 Black Sapphire. Mercedes-Benz places it on the B-pillar sticker or on a plate near the radiator support, again as a three-digit code such as 197.

Toyota and Lexus use the driver’s door jamb, with codes like 1F7 or 040. Ford of Europe prints it on the door jamb sticker. Vauxhall and Opel use a three-character code such as GAZ, historically found under the bonnet. Volvo puts a three-digit code on the door jamb or the inner wing.

When the sticker is missing, which is common on repaired or resprayed cars, the build record in the catalog becomes the only reliable route.

Solid, metallic, pearl and why the label matters for the repair

A code tells you more than a shade. It tells the sprayer what system to mix. A solid colour is a single stage. Metallics and pearls are two stage, with a base coat carrying the pigment and flake, then clear over the top. Some premium colours are three stage, with a translucent tinted layer between base and clear, and those are the ones that punish a shop for guessing.

This is why "it is white" is never enough. On a modern range there may be a solid white, a pearl white and a bright white restricted to one trim, all fitted to the same model in the same year. They mix differently, they cost differently, and they do not blend into each other.

The code is correct and the panel still does not match

This is the part that surprises people who have not worked in a body shop. Paint codes are formulas, and formulas drift. Manufacturers issue variant formulas for the same code because pigment batches vary between suppliers and plants, so a single BMW code may have several official variants on file.

On top of that, the car has been outside. Ten years of ultraviolet exposure moves a red noticeably and a silver slightly. A perfectly mixed factory formula will look wrong against a faded wing, which is why any competent refinisher sprays a test card and blends into adjacent panels rather than painting a single door edge to edge.

So the correct expectation to set with a customer is this: the code gets you the right formula family, the variant selection and the blend get you the invisible repair. If a shop promises an exact match from the code alone on a fifteen-year-old car, they are describing a best case rather than a method.

Trim, interior and the codes that travel with the paint

The same sticker that carries the paint code usually carries the interior trim code, and body work often needs both. Replacing a mirror cap, a bumper insert or a B-pillar trim means matching a finish that may be body colour on one build and black gloss on another.

Interior repairs are stricter still, because a seat panel or a dashboard section has no blending option. It either matches or it is obviously new. Pulling the trim code from the build record at the same time as the paint code takes seconds and avoids a second order.

A workflow that stops colour errors before they cost money

Photograph the identification sticker as part of vehicle check-in, before anything is stripped. Stickers vanish during body repairs, and a photograph taken at the start is free insurance.

Confirm the code against the vehicle build record rather than trusting a faded label, particularly on a car that has been repaired before. Then confirm the variant with a spray-out card against the actual panel in daylight, not under workshop lighting, which flatters everything.

None of this is exotic. It is the difference between a repair that is invisible from three metres and one the customer notices in the supermarket car park a week later.
