How to look up Lincoln parts by VIN
Six steps, the same on a Navigator as on a Corsair.
- 1. Read the 17-character VIN off the car rather than a job card. US-built Lincolns start 1LN on cars and 5LM on SUVs. The free VIN decoder at /vin-decoder/ helps check the model year.
- 2. Open the Lincoln catalog on VINsearch and enter the VIN.
- 3. Check the vehicle record, including engine, drivetrain and equipment. Read the application conditions for each diagram and part position.
- 4. Open the assembly group you need, brakes, suspension, lighting or body, and find the part on the exploded view.
- 5. Read the service number and its suffix. Follow any replacement chain and check its conditions before ordering a later revision.
- 6. Compare it with the part you removed. Castings and labels often carry an engineering number that differs from the service number, so compare the basic number in the middle first. That match alone does not confirm fitment.
Which Ford sits under which Lincoln
The Navigator has been the Lincoln counterpart of the Ford Expedition since it arrived for 1998, on the T1 platform from 2007 and on T3 since 2018. The long-wheelbase Navigator L came with the 2007 redesign. The Aviator sold since the 2020 model year is a version of the sixth-generation Explorer on the CD6 platform. The Corsair shares C2 with the fourth-generation Escape, sold in Europe as the Kuga, and with the Bronco Sport.
The sharing shows in the numbers. When Ford recalled 2020 Explorers and Aviators with all-wheel drive over drive shafts from one supplier, both badges carried the same part, L1M3-4K145, and dealers found the affected cars by reading the label on the shaft.
Expect Lincoln’s own numbers where the customer looks: grille, lamps, trim, cabin. Borrowing the Ford number there is how the wrong part arrives.
Aviator, Nautilus, Corsair: names that moved
The first Aviator, 2003 to 2005, was a body-on-frame SUV built on the third-generation Explorer. The name then went away until the 2020 model year and came back on a unibody crossover. Same badge, different construction, different Explorer underneath.
The MKX was renamed Nautilus for 2019 as part of a midcycle update, so a 2018 MKX and a 2019 Nautilus are one generation, refreshed. The second-generation Nautilus from 2024 is a new car, built only by Changan Ford in China. The Corsair replaced the MKC in 2019 on a new platform, and it has come from two plants, Louisville in Kentucky and Changan Ford in Chongqing.

Reading a Lincoln part number
Lincoln uses Ford’s layout: a four-character prefix, a basic number and a suffix. The basic number names the component in groups Ford has kept for decades. 2000 numbers are brakes, 4000 numbers axles and drive shafts, which is where 4K145 in the recall above belongs, and 13000 numbers are lamps. The suffix is the change level, A for the first release and B for the next.
Old paperwork has one more quirk. On older Lincoln and Mercury service numbers the fourth character of the prefix was Y, the letter Ford gave Lincoln-Mercury service parts, where Ford’s own carried Z. A Y there is not a typing error.
