A restraint system is calibrated as a whole. The control module holds deployment logic tuned to that body, its seats, its airbag types and its market, since regulations differ between regions on belt reminders, deployment thresholds and staged inflation.

The visible parts follow the same logic. A driver airbag is matched to a steering wheel design. A curtain airbag is matched to the roof line and pillar trim. Seat side airbags depend on the seat frame and upholstery, which is why the same model with sports seats takes different parts.

This is one of the clearest cases for reading the build record rather than searching by model name. The correct question is not "what airbag does this car take" but "what did this vehicle leave the factory with", and only the manufacturer record answers it.

Airbags, seat belt pretensioners and impact sensors are pyrotechnic or mechanically committed devices. Once fired they are finished, and there is no inspection that makes a deployed unit serviceable again.

Seat belts are the item most often underestimated. A belt with a fired pretensioner looks like a belt. It is not: the mechanism has done its job and the assembly is replaced, not reset. The same applies to buckle mounted pretensioners, which are easy to overlook in a repair estimate because they are hidden under trim.

The control module usually stores a crash record once deployment has occurred, and on most systems it is replaced rather than cleared. Devices sold to erase crash data exist, and using one leaves a vehicle whose restraint system reports itself healthy without any assurance that it is.

Coding, and the module that is useless without it

Restraint control modules are frequently coded to the vehicle, holding configuration for which devices are fitted and which occupant detection strategy applies. A module taken from another car, even the same model, may hold a configuration that does not match the vehicle it has been fitted to.

Occupant classification systems add another layer. Seats with weight sensing or occupancy mats often require calibration after any seat work, and a system that is out of calibration can suppress a passenger airbag for an adult occupant or enable it for a child seat. Both outcomes are exactly what the system exists to prevent.

The practical consequence for a parts order is simple: check what the procedure requires before promising the job. A module fitted without coding is a warning light and an inoperative restraint system.

Used airbag parts and why the trade avoids them

Salvage restraint components circulate, and they are cheap for reasons worth stating. Nobody can verify the storage conditions of a pyrotechnic device, its age, whether it has been subjected to impact, or whether it is a counterfeit sold into the salvage chain.

Counterfeit airbag modules have been a persistent enforcement problem, and the failure mode is not a part that does not work. It is a part that appears to work, keeps the warning light off, and does something unpredictable in an impact.

Insurers and manufacturers both take a firm line here, and in many jurisdictions fitting non-approved restraint components has direct legal exposure. A workshop that saves a customer money on an airbag is accepting a risk that is not theirs to accept.

Handling, storage and transport

Undeployed airbag modules are classed as dangerous goods in most jurisdictions, with rules covering how they are stored, labelled and carried. That is why suppliers ship them under specific conditions and why returns are handled differently from ordinary parts.

In the workshop the basics apply: disconnect the battery and wait the specified time before working near the system, carry modules with the cover facing away from the body, never place one face down on a bench, and store them upright in their original packaging. Deployed units are waste with their own disposal route rather than ordinary scrap.

None of this is complicated, and all of it is the difference between a routine job and an incident report.
