Why hardware stopped being the whole part
On a modern car, many components are half hardware, half configuration. The ECU expects to be told which exact injector sits in cylinder three; the battery-management system tracks the age and type of the battery it is protecting; a replacement module must join the car’s immobiliser family before anything works. Fit the right hardware without the digital step and the car behaves as if you fitted the wrong part.
This is not a fault of the parts data — the identification was correct. It is a second half of the job that has to be known, priced and scheduled.
The usual suspects
A working shortlist of parts that commonly demand a post-fit procedure:

Reading the warning signs at identification time
The moment you identify one of these parts is the moment to plan the handshake. The catalog’s fitment notes often hint at it — calibration codes printed on injectors, notes about variant coding on modules. The model’s service information states it outright. The skill is simply connecting the two at quoting time: this part, therefore this procedure, therefore this equipment and this many minutes.
The expensive version of this lesson is discovering the procedure at five in the afternoon, with the old part in a bin and the new one fitted, when the answer to “do we have the tool for this?” turns out to be no.
Used and OE parts raise the stakes
The handshake question sharpens with donor parts: a used module carries its previous car’s identity and needs re-marriage or virginising, which on some models is routine and on others is genuinely impractical. It also matters with OE-supplier components — the part may be identical to genuine, but the coding step is defined by the carmaker, and following the manufacturer’s procedure is what makes the fitment complete.
A good rule: for any electronic or emissions-related component, treat “can we code it?” as part of “can we fit it?”. If the answer is no, the cheap part is not cheap.

Customers experience coding as mysterious surcharges unless it is framed at the start. The honest quote names both halves: the component, identified by VIN in the official data, and the configuration step the manufacturer requires to bring it alive. Framed that way, it is not an extra — it is the reason the repair works on the first key-turn.
