Flooded, EFB or AGM: the chemistry is specified, not chosen
Vehicles with stop-start place demands on a battery that a conventional flooded unit is not built for: repeated deep-ish cycling and heavy recharge while the engine restarts constantly. Manufacturers answer that with enhanced flooded batteries or absorbed glass mat batteries, and they specify which one a given build takes.
Downgrading is the common mistake. Fitting a standard flooded battery to a car specified for AGM usually works for a season and then fails early, often with the stop-start function degrading first because the control system detects a battery that can no longer support it.
Upgrading is less harmful but not free either. AGM has a different charging voltage profile, and on some vehicles the charging strategy is set for the specified type. The rule that holds across brands is to fit what the build specifies.
Registration and coding: the step that gets skipped
Many modern vehicles monitor battery state of charge and age, and adapt charging voltage accordingly. When a new battery is fitted, the system has to be told, either by registering the replacement or by coding the new type and capacity.
Skip it and the charging strategy continues to treat the new battery as an old one, typically overcharging it. The customer gets a battery that dies inside two years and blames the parts supplier. On some platforms the omission also leaves stop-start disabled, which produces a complaint of its own.
Where the battery type changes, for example from EFB to AGM, coding the type is not optional on most systems. This is one of the clearest cases where the parts decision and the workshop procedure are the same decision.

Alternators: output, pulley and the noise nobody diagnoses
Alternator output is specified around the electrical load of the build. A car with heated seats, a large audio system, an electric heater element or towing preparation may carry a higher output unit than the base model, and fitting the smaller one leaves the system marginal in winter.
The pulley is a component in its own right. Many alternators use an overrunning alternator pulley or a one-way clutch pulley that decouples the rotor from the belt during deceleration, reducing belt noise and damping torsional vibration. When it seizes, the symptom is belt squeal and vibration that gets blamed on the belt or the tensioner.
Because the pulley is available separately on many units, an alternator that charges correctly but rattles on shutdown may need only the pulley. That is a considerably cheaper repair than the one the customer expected, which tends to be remembered.
Starters built for stop-start are a different part
A conventional starter is designed for a handful of engagements per day. A stop-start vehicle may restart the engine dozens of times in a single commute, and the starter is built accordingly with reinforced brushes, bearings and drive components.
Fitting a conventional starter to a stop-start car is a false economy that usually reveals itself within a year. The reverse also happens: some vehicles use a belt driven starter generator rather than a conventional starter at all, and that is a different system entirely with its own belt and control unit.
Mild hybrid systems with 48 volt architecture add a further variant, where the starter generator is part of the high current system and carries safety procedures with it. The build record is what distinguishes these, because the model name does not.
Diagnose before replacing
A flat battery is a symptom. The underlying cause may be a parasitic drain from a module that is not sleeping, a failing alternator, corroded earth straps, or simply a vehicle used for short journeys that never fully recharge it.
Replacing the battery without testing the charging system and the drain gives the customer a car that fails again in the same way, and a receipt. Ten minutes of measurement is cheaper than the second visit, and it also tells you whether the earth strap or the battery sensor is the real fault.

Do I have to register a new battery?
On vehicles with intelligent charging management, yes. Without it the system keeps charging as if the battery were old, which usually overcharges the new one.
Can I fit AGM instead of EFB?
Sometimes, but the type usually has to be coded so the charging profile matches. Fitting a lower specification than the build calls for is the change that reliably causes early failure.
Why does my new alternator squeal?
Check the pulley type. Overrunning alternator pulleys are often supplied separately, and a seized one produces belt noise and vibration that looks like a tensioner fault.
Is a stop-start starter really different?
Yes. It is built for many times the number of engagements, with reinforced components. A conventional unit fitted in its place tends to fail within a year.
