Spotting counterfeit parts before they reach the vehicle

What actually gets faked, and why those parts

Counterfeiters follow volume and margin. Brake pads and discs, oil and air filters, spark plugs, clutch kits, suspension components and airbag modules all appear regularly in enforcement seizures, because they sell constantly and a buyer cannot easily judge them by eye.

The engineering shortcuts are invisible until the part is loaded. Fake brake pads have been found using compressed sawdust and inadequate friction material, which behaves acceptably in gentle use and fades badly under heat. Counterfeit filters use media that collapses or bypasses. Fake airbag modules may deploy incorrectly or not at all, which is a different order of consequence.

The customer never sees any of this. They see a repair that was slightly cheaper, and then a failure that gets blamed on the workshop that fitted it.

The box tells you more than the part

Packaging is where counterfeits most often give themselves away, because printing quality is the hardest thing to fake cheaply at volume. Look for blurred or pixelated logos, colours that are slightly off against a known genuine box, spelling errors in the small print, and glue or seams that do not match the usual finish.

Most manufacturers now use security labels: holograms, colour shifting ink, data matrix codes or scratch panels linked to a verification service. Those exist precisely because the trade asked for them, and using them takes seconds. A code that fails to verify, or verifies as already used, is the end of the conversation.

Barcodes and part numbers should be consistent across the label, the box and the part itself. Counterfeit packaging is often produced generically and labelled later, so mismatches between printed number and applied label are common.

The part itself: what a careful look reveals

Genuine components are made to consistent tolerances with consistent finishing. Counterfeits often show rough casting flash, uneven machining, poor paint coverage, misaligned holes or fasteners that feel soft under a spanner.

Weight is a useful quick check on cast and forged parts, because material saving is where counterfeiters make their margin. A brake disc that feels noticeably light next to the one it replaces deserves scrutiny before it goes on a hub.

Markings matter too. Genuine parts usually carry moulded or stamped identifiers, supplier codes and date stamps in consistent positions and fonts. A part with a number that looks laser etched over the top of the original marking is a rebadged unit rather than what the box claims.

Verifying the number exists at all

The simplest check is one people skip: does the part number the seller quoted actually exist for that vehicle in the manufacturer catalog? Counterfeit listings frequently use numbers that are close to real ones, superseded, or from a different market.

Looking the number up against the build resolves three things at once. It confirms the number is real, it confirms it belongs to that vehicle, and it shows whether the number has been superseded, which tells you whether a seller is offering old stock or an invented reference.

This is not a substitute for buying through a supply chain you trust, but it catches the listings that were never plausible in the first place.

Where the risk enters a legitimate business

Very few workshops set out to buy counterfeits. The usual routes in are urgent jobs sourced from an unfamiliar online seller, customer supplied parts bought on a marketplace, and a supplier who has themselves been deceived further up the chain.

Customer supplied parts deserve a policy rather than an argument each time. Many shops decline them for safety critical systems, or fit them with a written note that the part is not covered by the workshop warranty. That is not obstruction. It is a workshop declining to underwrite a component whose origin nobody can prove.

For a business, documentation is the defence. Invoices that name the supplier, batch or security codes recorded against the job, and photographs of packaging for high value parts turn a dispute into a paper trail. Insurers and manufacturers both ask for exactly that when something fails.

What to do with a suspected counterfeit

Do not fit it, and do not simply return it and move on. Manufacturers run brand protection teams who want to know, and enforcement action depends on reports from the trade because that is where the parts surface.

Keep the packaging, the invoice and any security label intact, photograph everything before it goes anywhere, and report it to the manufacturer and the supplier. If a workshop discovers a counterfeit already fitted to a customer vehicle, the honest route is to tell the customer plainly what was found and what the safety implication is, even when the part came from them.
