R134a or R1234yf, and why it decides everything else
European regulation pushed new type approvals onto R1234yf from 2011 and the transition completed across new vehicles by 2017, but the changeover happened at different times for different models. That means the model year on its own does not tell you which refrigerant a car uses, and the production date does.
The two are not interchangeable. Service ports differ, the equipment differs, and cross-contaminating recovery machinery is an expensive mistake for a workshop. Most vehicles carry a label under the bonnet stating the refrigerant and charge weight, which is the first thing to read before connecting anything.
For parts, the refrigerant decides seals, oil and often the compressor variant. Ordering a condenser for the wrong refrigerant version of the same model is a straightforward way to lose a day.
Compressors and the oil that has to match them
Compressor designs split into fixed displacement units controlled by a clutch and variable displacement units that run continuously and vary their output. The control strategy differs, the electrical connection differs, and they are not substitutes.
The oil is where jobs go wrong quietly. Polyalkylene glycol oils come in different viscosities, commonly labelled PAG 46, PAG 100 and PAG 150, and the compressor manufacturer specifies which one. Systems on electric and hybrid vehicles with electrically driven compressors require a non-conductive polyol ester oil instead, because the compressor windings sit in the refrigerant circuit.
That last point is worth stating plainly: putting PAG oil into a hybrid or electric vehicle compressor circuit can create a conductive path in a high voltage system. It is a safety issue rather than a performance one, and it also contaminates any machine that later services the vehicle.

The drier is not optional
Every system contains a desiccant, either in a receiver drier on the high side or an accumulator on the low side. It absorbs the small amount of moisture the system will inevitably contain, and once it is saturated it stops protecting anything.
When a system is opened to atmosphere for a repair, the desiccant starts absorbing humidity immediately. Manufacturers therefore specify replacement whenever the circuit is opened, and moisture left in a system forms acids that attack the compressor from inside. The drier costs a fraction of the compressor it protects.
On many condensers the drier is integrated into the end tank as a replaceable cartridge, so the part to order depends on the design rather than on habit.
After a compressor failure, cleanliness decides the warranty
When a compressor fails mechanically it distributes metal particles through the system. Fitting a new compressor into that circuit without addressing the debris guarantees a second failure, and every compressor warranty in the trade assumes the job was done properly.
The accepted process is to flush what can be flushed, replace what cannot, and fit a new expansion valve or orifice tube along with the drier. Condensers with narrow parallel flow passages generally cannot be flushed effectively, which is why a full failure often means a new condenser as well.
It is an expensive conversation to have with a customer, and it is far cheaper than having it twice.
Cabin side: the parts customers actually notice
Most air conditioning complaints that arrive at a counter are not compressor failures. They are weak airflow from a blocked cabin filter, a noisy blower motor, a blend flap actuator that has stripped its gears, or an evaporator that smells because it has never been treated.
Blower resistors and control modules are also common, and they differ between manual air conditioning and automatic climate control on the same model. That is another point where the build record earns its keep, because the two look similar and behave very differently.

Can I convert an R134a system to R1234yf?
It is not a straight swap. Seals, oil, service ports and system design differ, and manufacturers do not approve conversions for existing vehicles.
How do I know which PAG oil to use?
From the compressor specification for that build. The grades are not interchangeable, and using the wrong viscosity shortens compressor life.
Do I have to change the drier for a simple leak repair?
If the system was opened to atmosphere, yes. The desiccant absorbs moisture as soon as the circuit is open and cannot be regenerated in service.
Why is my new compressor noisy after a week?
Most often because debris from the previous failure was left in the system, or because the oil charge was wrong. Both are covered by the manufacturer procedure for that vehicle.
