Renault Van Parts by VIN: Master, Trafic and Kangoo for Workshops and Fleets
Why three van names cover more vehicles than your whole car workload
The Master III, project X62, ran from 2010 to 2024 and was sold in front-wheel drive and rear-wheel drive. UK gross weight options ran 2,800, 3,300, 3,500 and 4,500 kg. Twin rear wheels were offered on the rear-drive versions at both 3.5 t and 4.5 t. Renault writes those TW in its own model naming, as in ML35TW, and the single-wheel versions carry no suffix at all. On top of that sit four lengths, three roof heights, panel van, crew cab, chassis cab, platform cab and minibus. One badge, one engine size, and a vehicle that changes shape underneath from one order to the next.
Aftermarket data does not pretend these are the same vehicle. TecDoc-derived catalogues split them into type families before they will show a single part, and the family is the first thing you want off the VIN.
None of that is printed on the V5 or on the side of the van. The customer knows it is a Master. The fleet manager knows it is a long one. Neither of them knows whether the catalogue wants FV, JV or UV, and picking the wrong family gets you a part that looks correct in the box and is wrong on the ramp.

"It's a Master 2.3 dCi": the sentence that orders the wrong part
The 2.3 dCi M9T was engineered from the start for both layouts. It sits transversely in a front-drive Master and longitudinally in a rear-drive one. Engine mounts, sump, ancillary drive and exhaust routing all differ. When the Master III launched, the M9T replaced two engines at once: the 2.5 dCi G9U on the front-drive vans and the Nissan-sourced 3.0 dCi ZD30 on the rear-drive ones. Anything older than 2010 wearing a Master badge is a different engine family altogether.
Engine suffixes will not rescue you. A suffix identifies the build of the engine and says nothing about the vehicle it was dropped into, and catalogue data has the same suffix appearing under both layouts. M9T 702 is listed under the 135 hp rear-drive Master van and under the 130 hp front-drive minibus. Order engine parts against the suffix. Take the driveline from the catalogue entry for that VIN. That is also why buying a used engine or gearbox on the block family alone ends with a unit on the stand that turns over freely and lines up with nothing.
The four-character type code is a weaker tool than it looks. FV0H and FV0J both sit in front-drive territory, where what separates them is power output. Rear-drive box vans carry their own block, FV0N, FV0P and the FV1x codes, and rear-drive platform and chassis vans carry HV and UV. FV0N is the code that genuinely straddles the divide, listed under a 135 hp rear-drive van and under a 135 hp front-drive one. A counter working from a half-remembered code supplies the wrong driveshaft or the wrong exhaust section and finds out on the lift.
Then there are phases. Master III was facelifted twice: Phase 1 from 2010, Phase 2 from 2014 with a revised grille and front end, Phase 3 from 2019 with a new front end, revised engines and a new interior. Phase 3 raised injection pressure to 2,000 bar and grew the AdBlue tank from 22 to 28 litres. Renault makes those changes at build, and the model year never lines up cleanly, so a van first registered in mid-2019 can sit either side of that line. Order Phase 3 front-end panels for a Phase 2 body and the whole clip is wrong.
L3H2, LM35, SL28: reading the shorthand the customer gives you
Renault settled on L1 to L4 for length and H1 to H3 for roof height, and those are the codes worth trusting. The Trafic III runs a 3,098 mm wheelbase in short form and 3,498 mm in long, with overall lengths of 5,080 mm and 5,480 mm, and the 2022 facelift added 80 mm to each overall length. The UK shorthand moved underneath the same bodyshell. Pre-2019 vans use SL27 and SL29, and at the 2019 update the plated gross weights went up by around 100 kg, so the same shapes became SL28 and SL30. That is a genuine difference in rating. Check which side of 2019 the van sits on before you quote springs or dampers.
The Master letter codes are read across dealer listings and trade data as length letter, roof letter, then gross weight in hundreds of kilograms, which makes LM35 a long, medium-roof 3.5 tonne van and lines it up with L3H2. No Renault brochure page confirms it, though, so treat LM35 as a hint about which van you are probably holding and order against what the catalogue returns.
Twin wheels matter more than either code. They change the axle, the hubs, the arches and the load bed, and the gap between the rear wheel arches drops to 1,080 mm on a twin-wheel body. A van sold as a 3.5 tonne Master can be single wheel or twin wheel, and everything hanging off the back of it follows the wheel count. Model names only get you halfway here. Renault marks the twin-wheel versions TW, while single-wheel versions carry no suffix of their own, so an absent TW proves nothing about how the van left the factory.
Is that Movano a Renault underneath, or a Ducato?
A rebadged van is routine cross-reference work right up until the platform changes under the same name. That has now happened on the large van and on the mid-size van. Movano B, sold from 2010 to 2021, is a Master III underneath. Movano C from 2021 is a Fiat Ducato, and the badge on the grille never changed. Vivaro made the same jump in 2019, onto the Peugeot Expert.
The Renault Express Van sold in the EU from 2021 to 2024 is the other trap, and despite the size it has no Kangoo underneath it. It is a revised Dacia Dokker on the Dacia M0 platform, built at Tangier in Morocco, with the K9K 1.5 dCi diesel and a 1.6 petrol option. It was withdrawn from the EU in July 2024 because the new driver-assistance safety requirements could not be justified on that low-cost body.
Where the platform does match, treat interchange as a working assumption. Prove it per part. Suppliers routinely assume Master III and Movano B hubs, bearings and wheel fitments are the same, and for plenty of items they are. Confirm it against the catalogue for the specific VIN instead of inheriting it from a listing headline.
- Movano A 1998 to 2010 is a Master II. Movano B 2010 to 2021 is a Master III. Movano C from 2021 is a Fiat Ducato.
- Nissan Interstar 2003 to 2010 is a Master II. NV400 2011/12 to 2022 is a Master III. The Interstar name returned for the Master III in 2022 and the Master IV in 2024.
- Vauxhall and Opel Vivaro 2001 to 2014 is a Trafic II. Vivaro 2014 to 2019 is a Trafic III. Vivaro from 2019 is a Peugeot Expert.
- Nissan Primastar 2002 to 2014 is a Trafic II. NV300 2016 to 2021 is a Trafic III. Primastar returned from 2021/22 on the facelifted Trafic III, built on the same Sandouville line as the Renault.
- Fiat Talento 2016 to 2021 and Mitsubishi Express 2020 to 2022 (Australia) are Trafic III.
- Nissan Kubistar 2003 to 2009 is a Kangoo I. Mercedes-Benz Citan W415 2012 to 2021 and Nissan NV250 2019 to 2021 are Kangoo II (X61), the Citan built alongside it by Renault subsidiary MCA at Maubeuge. Kangoo III from 2021 underpins the Nissan Townstar and the Mercedes Citan W420, T-Class and EQT.
Belt or chain? Get this wrong on a Trafic and you lose a morning
The 2.3 dCi M9T runs a timing chain. Replacement kits are sold as a 116-link simplex chain with tensioner, crankshaft gear and slide rails, and kit listings cover suffixes including M9T 670, 672, 676, 678, 680, 686, 690, 692, 694, 696, 698, 702, 870, 880 and 896. The suffix is how you confirm the kit. No Renault replacement interval for the chain stands up to checking, whatever the kit sellers print on the listing, so the job gets booked on noise and on history. The Trafic III 1.6 dCi R9M is also chain-driven. It is 1,598 cc, 80.0 mm bore by 79.5 mm stroke, and it is catalogued by suffix in the same way: R9M 408 for the 115 hp version, R9M 452 for the 125 hp version, with a twin-turbo 160 PS R9M elsewhere in the Renault range. A workshop that books a 1.6 dCi Trafic in for a cambelt either loses the job when the customer checks, or opens the front of an engine looking for a belt that was never fitted.
The 2019 Trafic facelift dropped the 1.6 for the 2.0 Blue dCi, usually described as M9R family, 1,995 cc, chain-driven, Euro 6d-Temp with SCR and AdBlue. Codes M9R 710 and M9R 717 are shared with the Fiat Talento and with the Nissan NV300 and Primastar, so one engine reference covers four nameplates. The Vivaro of that era is not among them, because from 2019 it is a Peugeot Expert running PSA engines.
The Kangoo is the exception sitting in your own workshop. The 1.5 dCi K9K is 1,465 cc, single overhead cam, eight valves, and it is timing-belt driven. Same manufacturer, same bay, opposite service item to the two vans parked either side of it.
How a fleet workshop should work a list of forty VINs
The temptation on a fleet contract is to spot-check one van and call it the spec for the rest. Fleets buy in batches, and batches straddle build windows. Forty Masters bought over three months can cross an engine change and a caliper recall window measured in days. One VIN checked out of forty is not a VIN check.
Decode the list once, properly, and keep the result. A fleet sheet with one row per van pays for itself in the first week: VIN, type family, drive layout, engine suffix, build phase, gross weight, single or twin rear wheel, length and roof code, front and rear disc diameter, wheel PCD and stud size, and any open recall against the build date. Build it from the official catalogue. The spreadsheet the fleet manager sent you was typed off an order form.
After that a phone call turns into a part number. You pre-stock for the vans you actually hold, and the range brochure stops setting your shelf. The parts that go wrong at high mileage, and why the number moves with the VIN
Brakes are the clearest case. Front and rear disc diameters catalogued across the Master range include 279, 280, 302, 304.9 and 305 mm. "Discs for a 3.5 tonne Master" is not a specification, and quoting one set against that description means a second parts run and a comeback on brake imbalance. There is also a factory recall for an incorrect rear right brake caliper covering builds from 10/02/2021 to 26/02/2021, a window sixteen days wide.
Wheels tell the same story. On the Master III the front-drive vans run a 5x130 fitment and the rear-drive and twin-wheel vans run 6x200, with M14x1.5 studs and a 142.1 mm centre bore on the 6x200. Wheel data for the Master also carries 5x170 and 5x190, and neither belongs on a Master III. Those are pre-2001 fitments, a generation trap sitting in the same lookup as the layout question. Twin-wheel bodies bring their own hub and arch dimensions with them.
Recall windows on these vans are the strongest single argument for working from a VIN. Some of them are days wide. A turbocharger induction pipe recall covers builds from 09/09/2015 to 20/09/2015. A fuel supply hose chafing on the cylinder head cover covers 02/01/2018 to 24/04/2019. A prop shaft bolt torque recall covers 07/04/2010 to 14/10/2013, which by definition only reaches rear-drive vans, and which you cannot even assess without knowing the layout first.
On the engine side, the chain-driven M9T and R9M both make chain work a genuine job at high mileage, and Euro 6 vans add SCR and AdBlue hardware that the early Phase 1 stock still running in fleets never had. The Phase 3 move to higher injection pressure means two Masters registered months apart can want different injection parts. Ask for the build date. The registration date is a guess wearing a suit.
Where the VIN stops: tippers, dropsides and the Luton box
Master factory conversions follow the base vehicle underneath, and the badge on the front tells you none of it. Tipper, dropside and box bodies are built on the chassis cab. The Luton low loader sits on the platform cab, front-wheel drive, with a 550 mm load height. The bodies themselves come from approved third-party converters such as VFS, TruckCraft and Ingimex.
The VIN opens the chassis cab or the platform cab and nothing above the chassis rails. Tipping gear, drop sides, the Luton box and its lighting all live in the converter's own documentation, because the vehicle manufacturer never made them. Workshops burn weeks chasing Renault for a part it has never listed. Find the converter plate on the body and start the call there instead.
Two other limits catch people out. A VIN returns build specification, so a van carrying a second-hand engine or a converter rework will read true to the factory and wrong to the ramp; check what is physically in front of you against what the catalogue returns. And Renault Trucks is a Volvo Group business, separate from Renault Group, so even where a Renault Trucks-badged Master exists, its parts and documentation channel is not the car and van channel you are logged into.

Renault genuine references run to ten characters and normally end in R. Some carry a letter inside the block and most do not, so a letter in the middle is a variation on the pattern and never a test a number has to pass. Older references commonly begin 8200. Motrio is a separate catalogue entirely: Renault's own multi-brand parts line, launched in 1998, covering roughly a thousand vehicles across forty makes. A Motrio number and a Renault genuine number do not come from the same book, and quoting one while the supplier reads the other is how a straightforward order becomes a forty-minute phone call.
