Does Mazda use Ford parts? On some generations, and the VIN shows which

Ford and Mazda: the ownership dates

Ford took a 24.5% stake in Mazda in 1979 and raised it to a controlling 33.4% in May 1996. In 2008 Ford sold 20% and dropped to 13.4%, cut again to 3% in 2010, and sold its remaining shares on 30 September 2015.

Shared engineering follows those dates with a lag. A car designed during the controlling years can stay in production long after the stake shrank, so go by the generation of the car and leave the badge and the model year out of the decision.

Mazda and Ford models that share parts

These are the verified pairings you are most likely to meet at the counter:

  • Mazda3 (BK, 2003 to 2008, and BL) and Ford Focus: both Mazda3 generations use Ford’s C1 platform, shared with the second-generation European Focus and the Volvo S40. The Mazda5 (CR, 2005 to 2010) and the CX-7 (2006 to 2012) sit on C1 as well.
  • Mazda Tribute (2000 to 2011) and Ford Escape: developed together with Ford and built on the CD2 platform with the Escape and the Mercury Mariner. The V6 is Ford’s 3.0-litre Duratec.
  • Mazda BT-50 and Ford Ranger: the first BT-50 (2006 to 2011) is based on the Ranger and shares its 2.5 and 3.0-litre diesels. The second (2011 to 2020) is based on the Ranger T6.
  • Engines: the Mazda L engine, sold as MZR, was co-developed with Ford, and Ford uses it as its 1.8 to 2.5-litre Duratec in the Focus, Escape, Fusion, Mondeo and Transit Connect.

After the split: Skyactiv and the Isuzu BT-50

Mazda announced Skyactiv in 2011 as its own family of engines, gearboxes and chassis, and the CX-5 shown at the Tokyo Motor Show in October 2011 was the first car to use it. The third-generation Mazda3 from 2013 moved onto the Skyactiv chassis and no longer shares the Ford C1 platform, and it was the first Mazda3 built outside Ford ownership.

The pickup changed partners too. The third-generation BT-50, unveiled in Australia on 17 June 2020, is based on the Isuzu D-Max and built at Isuzu’s plant in Samrong, Thailand. A Ranger part will not fit it, so check the generation before you quote a BT-50 job.

Which parts cross and which stay Mazda

On a shared platform the hidden hardware crosses most often: engine internals and service parts on shared engines, suspension arms, hubs, bearings and brake hardware. Mazda tuned its own versions of some shared cars, and the Tribute was sold with sportier suspension than its Ford siblings, so springs and dampers need checking even on a pair.

Body panels, lamps, interior trim and the electronics stay brand-specific. A Mazda3 and a Focus of the same era share a platform, while the bodies, lamps and cabins are each brand’s own design and the modules carry each brand’s own software.

How to check a Mazda and a Ford part by VIN

Mazda and Ford keep separate catalogs with separate numbering. Mazda numbers lead with a platform code, as our guide to Mazda part numbers explains, so the same physical part will not show the same number in both. Decode the Mazda VIN in the Mazda catalog and the Ford VIN in the Ford catalog, and find the part in each car’s own diagram.

To prove that the two are the same part, compare the supplier reference on the part and the fitting notes in each catalog. Where either catalog shows a variant or a date split, order against the VIN of the car you are fixing.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Mazda3 a Ford Focus underneath?

The first two generations, BK and BL, use Ford’s C1 platform with the second-generation European Focus. The third generation from 2013 moved to Mazda’s Skyactiv chassis.

Does the Mazda BT-50 use Ford Ranger parts?

The first two generations (2006 to 2020) are based on the Ranger. The third generation from 2020 is based on the Isuzu D-Max, so Ranger parts do not apply to it.

When did Ford stop owning part of Mazda?

Ford sold its remaining Mazda shares on 30 September 2015. It had given up control in 2008 when it cut its stake to 13.4%.

Do Mazda and Ford use the same part numbers?

No. Each brand numbers parts in its own catalog, so a shared part has a Mazda number and a Ford number. Match them through the catalog entry for each VIN and the supplier reference.
