Mazda part numbers explained: reading PE01-14-302A before you order

Four blocks, read left to right

Take the oil filter cartridge PE01-14-302A. PE01 is the application, and the PE at its start matches the code of the 2.0-litre Skyactiv-G petrol engine. The 14 is the catalog section that holds the part. The 302 identifies the cartridge, and the A marks a revision.

Mazda’s US parts site lists PE01-14-302, PE01-14-302A and PE01-14-302B as three separate entries, and the B entry carries a turbo engine note. Read the letter as part of the number, and order the revision you find in the catalog for the car in front of you.

Some numbers carry one more block after the revision, a colour code, which Mazda adds when a part needs one. On painted trim and interior panels, two parts can share all the other blocks and differ in that suffix alone.

Engine codes at the front of the number

Mazda’s engine codes are two characters long. Among the Skyactiv-G petrol engines, P5 is the 1.5-litre, PE the 2.0-litre and PY the 2.5-litre. The 2.2-litre Skyactiv-D diesel is SH.

The same letters open many engine-related part numbers, and that gives you a fast sanity check. If someone quotes a gasket with a PY prefix for a car with the 2.0-litre engine, check it again. The prefix records the engine Mazda first designed the part for, and Mazda carries some parts across engines, so confirm the match in the catalog against the VIN.

The VIN tells you which Mazda you have

A Mazda VIN opens with a manufacturer code. JM1 marks a Mazda car, JM3 a Mazda MPV or SUV, and JMZ a Mazda built for export to Europe.

Mazda also uses short generation codes, and you will meet them in catalogs and on forums. The first CX-5 is the KE and the second the KF. The Mazda3 of 2013 is the BM and the 2019 car the BP, and the current MX-5 is the ND. Two cars badged CX-5 in the same car park can be a KE and a KF, with different parts under one name.

You do not need to memorise any of this. Enter the VIN in the catalog and you get the generation, the engine and the gearbox together, and those three are what a parts lookup needs.

A quick check before you order

Match the engine prefix to the car and read the revision letter as part of the number. On anything painted or trimmed, confirm the colour suffix too. If a number someone sent you looks wrong, paste it into the free OEM part number lookup, which recognises the Mazda format and shows you the pattern beside it.

Frequently asked questions

How do I read a Mazda part number?

In four blocks. The first four characters name the application Mazda designed the part for, the next two the catalog section, the next three the part, and a final letter the revision. Mazda adds a colour code when a part needs one.

What does PE mean in a Mazda part number?

PE is the code of the 2.0-litre Skyactiv-G petrol engine, and parts designed for it often start with PE. The prefix records the original application, so confirm fitment against the VIN in the catalog.

Are the A and B revisions of a Mazda part interchangeable?

Treat them as different parts until you confirm otherwise in the catalog for your VIN. Mazda lists the base number and each revision as separate entries, and some revisions carry notes such as a turbo engine.

Which Mazda engine code is the diesel?

SH is the 2.2-litre Skyactiv-D diesel. The Skyactiv-G petrol engines are P5 for 1.5 litres, PE for 2.0 and PY for 2.5.
