Geely parts by VIN, and what the Volvo connection means at the counter
Two architectures, two sizes
Geely and Volvo developed the Compact Modular Architecture together at CEVT, a research centre in Gothenburg, starting in 2013. CMA sits under the Volvo XC40, several Lynk & Co models, and Geely cars such as the Monjaro, the Starray and the Tugella.
The smaller Coolray, sold as the Binyue in China, was the first SUV on the B-segment Modular Architecture, which Geely developed on its own. The current Coolray pairs a 1.5-litre turbocharged engine with a seven-speed wet dual-clutch gearbox.
Each brand numbers its own parts
A Monjaro and an XC40 share an architecture, and Geely and Volvo each assign their own part numbers and publish them in their own catalogs. You look up a Geely in Geely’s catalog and a Volvo in Volvo VIDA.
If the two brands buy a component from the same supplier, the supplier’s own reference can match across both. That helps you find stock, and you still check it against the catalog entry for the VIN in front of you. Our guide to OE supplier brands shows how to match those references.
Proton shares Geely underpinnings
Geely Automobile Holdings took a stake in Proton in 2017, and two Proton SUVs grew out of Geely models. The Proton X70 is a rebadged Geely Boyue, and the Proton X50, launched in 2020, is a rebadged Binyue, the car sold abroad as the Coolray, with a right-hand-drive conversion and mechanical changes of its own.
Proton is not available on VINsearch. Treat the family tree as background: the conversion and Proton’s own changes mean a Coolray number needs checking before anyone fits it to an X50.
Reading a Geely VIN
Geely VINs start with L6T or LB3. L6T also appears on Lynk & Co and Zeekr vehicles, and LB3 on Geely, Galaxy and Geometry cars.
A group code gives you the family, and the catalog decode gives you the car. Geely sells some models under different names in China and abroad, as the Coolray and the Binyue show, so trust the decode over the badge.
A Coolray service, step by step
Confirm the VIN in the free VIN decoder first. A Geely VIN starts with L6T or LB3, and the decoder gives you the model year.
Decode the VIN in the Geely catalog to confirm the engine and gearbox. On the current Coolray, the seven-speed gearbox is a wet dual-clutch unit, so its fluid and filter come from the gearbox group, and you order them against the build the VIN resolves. Check the numbers for supersessions, then record them on the job card with the VIN.
Geely parts on VINsearch
The Geely catalog on VINsearch covers Geely-branded cars, decoded by VIN. Lynk & Co and Zeekr are not available, and Volvo has its own catalog on the platform, Volvo VIDA.
Frequently asked questions
Can I use Volvo parts on a Geely?
Treat them as separate catalogs. The Monjaro and the XC40 share an architecture, and each brand gives its parts its own numbers, so confirm any match by VIN in the Geely catalog.
Is the Geely Coolray the same car as the Binyue?
Yes. Geely sells it as the Binyue in China and as the Coolray in export markets.
What does L6T mean at the start of a VIN?
L6T is a Geely group manufacturer code, used on Geely, Lynk & Co and Zeekr vehicles.
