How to verify OEM BMW parts authenticity when the box looks right

What BMW says about counterfeit parts

BMW Group started a Brand Protection Program from its Munich headquarters, and the 2011 announcement put the risk in plain terms: fake products can affect how a vehicle works and how safe it is, leading to wear, damage and even accidents. Its example was the alloy wheel. A counterfeit wheel, BMW said, can deform and break in the inner rim wall.

The advice that came with it was to buy through authorized BMW dealers, whose staff BMW trains against fakes. In the US, Original BMW Parts carry a two-year, unlimited-mileage limited warranty and are sold through Shop.BMWUSA.com and authorized BMW centers. A receipt from one of those settles where the part came from, which no label can do.

The hologram strip on newer BMW boxes

In July 2025 BMW Group and KURZ SCRIBOS launched what they call the first digitally verifiable hologram strip, meant to protect a spare parts network of more than 40 million parts in circulation. Only trained experts with a dedicated authentication app can verify it, so a hologram that looks right in your hand proves little, and a box packed before the strip arrived won’t carry one. On an expensive part, ask a BMW dealer to check it.

Read the 11-character number on the label

A BMW number has eleven characters, printed in blocks of two, two, one, three and three. BMW’s January 2025 bulletin SIB 11 10 24 lists the oil pump as 11 41 9 847 199: main group 11 for the engine, subgroup 41, then the seven-character identifier. Our post on BMW part numbers decodes the groups.

Some newer numbers carry letters. The same bulletin lists BMW LL-01 FE 0W-30 engine oil as 83 21 5 A42 D33, so a letter in the identifier is no sign of a fake. A count of ten or twelve characters is a reason to stop and ask. You will see the same number written with dashes, dots or no spaces, and some labels add a short index after it for a revision.

Verify OEM BMW parts authenticity on the part itself

Almost every BMW part has at least its seven-character identifier printed on it, unique to that part. On the oil pump above that is 9 847 199. Compare it with the label before the part goes anywhere near the car.

If the two disagree, find out why before you fit it. A supersession can explain it, and ETK shows the chain. A relabeled box can explain it too. The physical signs of a fake, from weight to casting finish to print quality, are in our counterfeit parts checklist.

Check the number against your car in ETK

A genuine BMW part can still be the wrong part. Enter the VIN in BMW ETK, open the main group the number starts with, then the diagram, and look for the number on your label. ETK applies the car’s production date and options, so the number there is the one BMW specifies for that build, with any supersession shown.

If the label’s number never turns up for your car, stop. Either the part belongs to another model or the number does not exist, and both are worth knowing before you pay. VINsearch opens BMW ETK for BMW and MINI in the browser, from $5 for a Day Pass.

An OE-supplier box is not a fake

Many BMW parts come from suppliers that also sell under their own name. ZF’s Lemförder brand sells front control arms for the BMW 3 Series to 6 Series and describes the range as OE quality. That box carries the Lemförder name and a Lemförder reference, and it makes no claim to be BMW.

A counterfeit is a part wearing BMW’s marks without BMW’s approval. A supplier part sold under the supplier’s own brand is a different product, outside BMW’s parts warranty, and our post on who makes BMW parts shows how to match its reference to the BMW number for your car.

Frequently asked questions

How do I know if a BMW part is genuine?

Buy it from an authorized BMW dealer or BMW’s own online shop, then check that the label number, the number printed on the part and the ETK number for your VIN all match.

Can I scan the hologram on a BMW parts box myself?

No. KURZ SCRIBOS, which makes the strip for BMW, says it can only be verified by trained experts with a dedicated app.

Is a Lemförder part the same as genuine BMW?

It is ZF’s own brand, sold as OE quality, but it is not an Original BMW Part and BMW’s parts warranty does not cover it. Make sure the listing names your exact BMW number.

Does a letter in a BMW part number mean it is fake?

No. Some current BMW identifiers contain letters, such as 83 21 5 A42 D33 for LL-01 FE 0W-30 oil. Count the characters instead: a BMW number has eleven.
