BMW part number structure: main groups, subgroups and lookup by VIN
Main group, subgroup and identifier
Take 11 41 9 847 199, the oil pump listed in BMW’s January 2025 bulletin SIB 11 10 24. The 11 is the main group, engine. The 41 is the subgroup inside it, and 9 847 199 identifies the part.
BMW numbers its workshop paperwork with the same groups. The repair instruction for fitting that oil pump is 11 41 000, and the bulletin carries the engine group in its own name. Learn a handful of groups, and part numbers and bulletins start pointing you to the same corner of the car.
The seven-character identifier is unique to the part. A loose component with only those characters on its label can still be traced in the catalog.
BMW part number main groups
The main groups below cover most of what crosses a parts counter. Group names follow FCP Euro’s published list, and the fluid numbers come from BMW’s own bulletins.
An independent BMW specialist’s guide calls group 51 the largest of all. Bumpers, rubber seals, the dashboard, carpets and door panels all sit there.
- 11 engine: the oil filter element set 11 42 7 583 220 and the oil pump 11 41 9 847 199
- 12 engine electrics, 13 fuel injection and 16 fuel supply
- 17 cooling system and 18 exhaust
- 21 clutch, 23 manual gearbox and 24 automatic gearbox
- 31 front suspension, 32 steering and 33 rear suspension
- 34 brakes, 35 pedals and 36 wheels
- 41 bodywork, 51 vehicle trim and 52 seats
- 61 body electrics, 62 instruments, 63 lighting and 64 climate control

Spaces, dashes and the index after the number
BMW prints its numbers in blocks of two, two, one, three and three, as in 11 42 7 583 220. Parts sellers print the same number with dashes, with dots or as one run of eleven characters. All of these point to one part, so strip the separators before you search.
Some parts carry a short index after the number, such as the -12 on the fuel injector 13 53 7 585 261-12. The index marks a revision of the part under the same number. Search with the eleven characters and treat the index as a detail to compare with the part in your hand.
Newer BMW numbers contain letters
Recent numbers put letters in the identifier. BMW’s 2025 oil pump bulletin lists LL-01 FE 0W-30 engine oil as 83 21 5 A42 D33 and HT-12 antifreeze as 83 19 5 A32 851. A 2017 bulletin gave 0W-30 engine oil as 83 21 2 365 950, all digits.
Count characters when you check a BMW number. A spreadsheet or parts system that accepts digits only will cut these references short, and a search for the digits alone misses the part.
Supersession: when the number changes
BMW revises parts through a model’s life, and a revised part can take a new number. The old number then leads to its replacement in the catalog, sometimes through several steps. A number copied from an old invoice or a forum post can be one or two revisions behind.
Read the current number in the live catalog before you order. Our BMW ETK guide covers the long supersession chains on older models.
Look up a BMW part number by VIN
Enter the 17-character VIN in the catalog and it opens the diagrams for that build, arranged by the same main groups. Pick the group, open the diagram and read the number beside the part. Options and production date are already applied, so you see the brake disc or headlight your car left the factory with.
If you hold a number and no car, paste it into the free OEM number lookup to confirm it has the BMW Group format, then search it in the catalog to see the part. VINsearch opens BMW ETK for BMW and MINI in the browser, with the other catalogs on the same login, from $5 for a Day Pass.
Frequently asked questions
How many digits is a BMW part number?
Eleven characters: a two-digit main group, a two-digit subgroup and a seven-character identifier. Older numbers are all digits. Some recent ones carry letters in the identifier, such as 83 21 5 A42 D33 for BMW 0W-30 engine oil.
What do the first two digits of a BMW part number mean?
They are the main group. 11 is engine, 17 cooling, 34 brakes, 51 vehicle trim, 61 body electrics and 63 lighting. BMW engine oils and antifreeze sit in group 83.
Is 11427583220 the same as 11 42 7 583 220?
Yes. BMW prints numbers with spaces, sellers often use dashes or dots, and some systems store one run of characters. All of them point to the same part.
What does the number after the dash mean?
An index such as -12 on 13 53 7 585 261-12 marks a revision of the part under the same number. Search with the eleven characters and compare the index with the part you are replacing.
How do I find a BMW part number by VIN?
Enter the VIN in BMW ETK, open the main group and the diagram, and read the number beside the part. The catalog applies the car’s options and production date, and shows the current number if the old one was superseded.
