Who makes BMW parts: the suppliers behind the BMW box

Who makes BMW parts: suppliers you can name

BMW buys whole systems from specialist makers, and some of those links are public. The list below keeps to the ones a published source confirms.

  • ZF: the 8HP eight-speed automatic, which first went into the 7 Series 760Li (F01) in 2008. BMW remains a major customer.
  • Getrag: the 7DCI600 seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox in the M3 from 2008 to 2018, the M4 from 2014 to 2020 and the M2 from 2016 to 2021, and manual gearboxes such as the five-speed Type 250 in the E36 and E46.
  • Bosch: the MEVD 17.2 engine control unit on the N55 turbocharged six-cylinder.
  • BorgWarner: the twin-scroll turbocharger on the same N55.
  • Brembo: brakes for BMW since the 1980s.
  • Magna Steyr: whole cars. It built the G29 Z4 in Graz from 2018 until production ended in 2026, and it has assembled 5 Series cars there too.

MINI follows the same pattern

Getrag supplied the five-speed Type 252 for the MINI One and Cooper and the six-speed Type 285 for the Cooper S. For the engine side of the MINI story, see our post on the MINI Cooper Peugeot engine.

Genuine BMW, OE-supplier box and aftermarket

A genuine part comes in BMW packaging under the BMW number, through BMW’s own parts supply. An OE-supplier part comes from a company that supplies BMW’s production, sold in that company’s box under its own reference. An aftermarket part is built to fit by a maker that did not supply the factory.

ZF shows the middle route well. Under its Lemförder brand it sells control arms for the front axles of the BMW 3 Series to 6 Series, rear control arms for the X4 and stabilizer links for the i3, and it describes the range as OE quality. ZF also says up to 70 Lemförder components can go into one car. Our post on OEM vs genuine parts covers the labels in detail.

A familiar logo on the box leaves the question open. A supplier that built a part for one BMW can sell a part for another model it never supplied, under the same brand.

Match the supplier part with the ETK number

Start with the car. Decode the VIN in BMW ETK, open the diagram and note the BMW number for that build, with any supersession applied. That number is the fixed point for every comparison that follows.

Supplier catalogs list the carmaker numbers each of their parts replaces. Search the supplier catalog with the BMW number, then check that the supplier part lists your exact number. A listing for a sister model or an older revision is a different part until the numbers match.

If ETK shows that the number was superseded, search the supplier catalog with the old number and the current one. A supplier listing may cite either number, and the old one can still point to the earlier design. Our guide to OE supplier brands walks through the cross-reference step by step.

One supplier, many carmakers

Suppliers build the same product family for several carmakers. ZF’s 8HP has gone into cars from more than 20 brands, from BMW to Ram, so a part sold as fitting an 8HP gearbox needs checking against the BMW number for your car.

The same care applies inside BMW. Engine, gearbox and option packs change parts between cars with the same badge, and the VIN lookup is what separates them.

Read the BMW number first

ETK gives you BMW’s own numbers, diagrams and supersessions for each VIN. For the supplier’s reference, use the supplier’s catalog, the label on the part or your distributor. VINsearch opens BMW ETK for BMW and MINI in the browser, from $5 for a Day Pass, so you can pin down the BMW number before you shop for the box.

Frequently asked questions

Who makes BMW parts?

Many come from specialist suppliers. ZF makes the 8HP automatic gearbox, Getrag built the dual-clutch gearbox for the M3, M4 and M2, and Bosch and BorgWarner supplied the N55 engine control unit and turbocharger. Brembo has supplied BMW brakes since the 1980s.

Are OE-supplier parts the same as genuine BMW parts?

Often the part matches what BMW fitted, sold in the supplier’s box under the supplier’s reference. Check that the supplier lists your exact BMW number, found by VIN, before you treat it as the same part.

Is Lemförder the same as BMW?

No. Lemförder is ZF’s aftermarket brand for steering and chassis parts. ZF sells Lemförder control arms for the BMW 3 Series to 6 Series and describes the range as OE quality.

Who builds the BMW Z4?

Magna Steyr built the G29 Z4 in Graz, Austria, from 2018 until production ended in 2026. BMW developed it alongside the fifth-generation Toyota Supra on a shared platform.
