VW PR codes: the three characters that pick the right brake disc
Where to find the codes
Volkswagen prints the PR codes on a vehicle data sticker. HELLA places the sticker in the service booklet or in the boot, and the Ross-Tech wiki calls it the vehicle data label.
The same sticker carries the VIN along with the engine and gearbox codes, so it is the first thing to find when a car arrives with no paperwork.
Reading the sticker from top to bottom
The sticker opens with the VIN and the model code, then gives the engine and gearbox codes and the paint and interior codes. The PR codes sit in a block underneath.
Read that block as a list of facts about the car, one code for each family of equipment. You do not need to know the codes by heart. Find the family that matters for the job, match its code in ETKA, and leave the rest.
How a PR code narrows the part
PR codes come in families, and a car carries one code from each family that applies to it. HELLA gives two brake examples: 1LX for front disc brakes and 1ZE for coated front disc brakes.
In ETKA, one parts diagram can list several front brake discs for a single model, each marked with the PR code it goes with. You match the code on the car to the code in the catalog, and the disc left over is the one you order.
Model and engine still leave a shortlist
Volkswagen Group offers more than one brake size and running-gear option within a model and engine, and the choice depends on the equipment the first buyer ordered. Search by model and engine and you get a shortlist. Match the PR codes and you get one part.
Audi, Škoda, SEAT and Cupra use PR codes too, so the same method works across the group.
Brake parts in the box carry the code too
HELLA labels brake parts with the PR number so that you can match the box to the car without guesswork. Compare the PR code on the supplier’s label with the code on the car before the old parts come off.
If the codes differ, stop and check the catalog entry for the VIN. A disc that fits a different brake family can look close enough on the bench and still sit wrong on the hub.
When the sticker has gone
Stickers go missing with replaced boot carpets and lost service booklets. Decode the VIN in ETKA and you get the factory data back, PR codes included, since ETKA stores the build record against the VIN.
The factory record will not show parts fitted later. If a previous owner upgraded the brakes, check what is on the car before you trust the factory code.
ETKA on VINsearch
VINsearch opens ETKA in the browser for Volkswagen, Audi, Škoda, SEAT and Cupra. Enter the VIN and you see the PR codes next to the parts each code belongs to. For more, read ETKA explained or go straight to ETKA parts by VIN.
