Are Bentley parts the same as VW and Audi? Some are, down to the number
Are Bentley parts the same as VW and Audi parts?
Some are, by design. The Continental GT of 2003 was the first new Bentley after Volkswagen AG bought the company in 1998, and it was built on the Group’s D1 platform, the base of the Volkswagen Phaeton. The Continental Flying Spur followed in 2005 on the same platform.
The partners have changed since. The current Bentayga shares its platform with Audi, Porsche, VW and Lamborghini SUVs, and the current coupé and saloon share theirs with Porsche.
Which Bentley shares with which Audi, Porsche or VW
Match the model and the generation before you look at a donor car.
- Continental GT, first and second generations (2003 to 2018): Volkswagen Group D1 platform, shared with the Volkswagen Phaeton.
- Flying Spur, first and second generations (2005 to 2019): the same D1 platform.
- Continental GT from 2018 and Flying Spur from 2019: MSB, shared with the second-generation Porsche Panamera. The fourth-generation GT of 2024 stays on MSB.
- Bentayga, in production since December 2015: MLB Evo, shared with the second Audi Q7 (type 4M), the Audi Q8, the third Porsche Cayenne, the third VW Touareg and the Lamborghini Urus.
Engines: Group families, Bentley versions
The 6.0-liter W12 is a Volkswagen Group engine that also went into the VW Phaeton, the Touareg and the Audi A8. Bentley’s versions are twin-turbocharged, one turbo per cylinder bank, so turbo, intake and exhaust parts should come from a Bentley lookup, never from a Phaeton listing.
Bentley and Audi developed the 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8 in the second-generation Continental GT V8 together. The Bentayga’s diesel V8, offered from 2017, was derived from the Group’s diesel V8. A shared engine family is a good place to look for a common part and a poor reason to assume one.
The 2024 Continental GT dropped the W12 altogether. Its engine is a 4.0-liter V8 with hybrid drive, so parts for the newest GT start from a different list again.
Audi numbers on a Bentley
Bentley’s own recall papers show how deep the sharing runs. Recall 25V-811, filed with NHTSA in November 2025, covers 2023 model year Bentayga Hybrids. It lists the high-voltage battery as 4M0.915.101.D and the battery management controller as 4M0.915.233.AD. The 4M matches the type code of the second-generation Audi Q7.
The battery came from Samsung SDI Hungary. Bentley’s chronology starts on 27 October 2023, with a notice about a possible battery problem from another VW Group brand, and the report records no field occurrences on Bentley vehicles. The warning reached Bentley through the Group before any Bentley showed the fault.
What stays Bentley
Expect the panels, lamps, grille and cabin trim to be Bentley-specific, even on a shared platform. Those are the parts a Bentley buyer pays for, and a Bentley number on a trim part is the normal case. Check anyway, because the Q7-numbered battery shows how far below the surface the shared parts reach.
Even the Bentayga’s body shell comes out of a Group plant. It is built at Volkswagen’s Zwickau-Mosel plant, then painted and assembled at Bentley’s factory in Crewe. A shared factory is still not a shared part number.
How to check a Bentley part against VW and Audi
Start from the Bentley VIN in the Bentley catalog, which VINsearch opens separately from ETKA. Open the diagram and read the number. The prefix is your first clue: a 4M0 number on a Bentayga part points to the Q7 family.
Then search the same number in ETKA, the Volkswagen, Audi, Škoda and SEAT catalog. If an Audi or VW model lists it, the part is shared. If nothing comes up, treat the part as Bentley-only whatever its prefix, and order the number the Bentley catalog gives.
Comparing a Bentley VIN with an Audi or Porsche VIN comes down to the numbers: if they match, the part is shared. The Porsche side of the family follows the same logic with its own catalog.
Frequently asked questions
Is a Bentley just a Volkswagen?
No. Bentley is a Volkswagen Group brand, and the Bentayga, Continental GT and Flying Spur use Group platforms shared with Audi, Porsche, VW or Lamborghini models. The styling and many visible parts are Bentley’s.
Is the Bentayga based on the Audi Q7?
It shares the MLB Evo platform with the second-generation Q7, the Q8, the Porsche Cayenne, the VW Touareg and the Lamborghini Urus. Some Bentayga parts carry Q7-style 4M0 numbers.
What platform is the Bentley Continental GT on?
The first two generations, 2003 to 2018, used the D1 platform of the VW Phaeton. Since 2018 the GT has used MSB, the platform of the second-generation Porsche Panamera.
Can I fit an Audi part to my Bentley?
Only when the Bentley catalog lists that same number for your VIN. A part that looks identical can still carry a different number, and then it is a different part.
