Are Porsche parts the same as Audi and VW? Partly, and the number shows where
Are Porsche parts the same as Audi and VW? Model by model
The pairs change with each generation, so start from the Porsche type code.
- Cayenne, first generation (9PA, 2002 to 2009): PL71 platform, shared with the VW Touareg and the first Audi Q7. Bodies were built in Bratislava and finished in Leipzig.
- Cayenne, second generation (92A, 2010 to 2017): PL72, again with the Touareg and the Q7.
- Cayenne, third generation (9YA and 9YB, from 2017): MLB Evo, shared with the third Touareg, the second Q7, the Q8, the Bentley Bentayga and the Lamborghini Urus.
- Cayenne, fourth generation (from 2026): an electric-only model on the Premium Platform Electric, the PPE family of the electric Macan.
- Macan, first generation (95B, from 2014): built on the platform of the first Audi Q5, type 8R. The electric Macan of 2024 moved to PPE, which it shares with the Audi Q6 e-tron.
- Panamera: the first generation (970, 2009 to 2016) had Porsche’s own platform. The 971 (2016 to 2024) and the 976 (from 2024) use MSB, shared with the Bentley Continental GT and Flying Spur.
- Taycan (from 2019): J1 platform, shared with the Audi e-tron GT. The first cars are type 9J1 I and the 2024 update is 9J1 II, so give the catalog the VIN rather than the model name.
What crosses: hidden hardware and engine families
Where the platform matches, the parts you never see often match too. Porsche’s 2020 recall campaign ALA2 puts it on paper. It covered 70,117 Macans (95B) of the 2015 to 2018 model years, where the fuel pump service cover could press on the filter flange and crack it.
The replacement flange is an Audi-numbered part: 8R0919679E for cars without an auxiliary heater, 8R0919679D for cars with one. The 8R is the first Audi Q5’s type code. The same campaign lists a seal as 9A791913340, eleven characters in Porsche’s own format. Two numbering systems, one repair, one car.
Engines follow the same pattern. Engine tables for the 971 Panamera list its V6 under the Volkswagen-Audi EA839 family and its twin-turbo V8 as the Volkswagen-Porsche EA825.
Options decide the part, even on shared hardware
ALA2 also shows why a shared part still needs the VIN. The flange depends on the car’s I-number: 9M0 means no auxiliary heater and takes the E version, 9M1 or 9M9 means a heater and takes the D. Our post on Porsche option codes shows where to read those codes on the car.
What stays Porsche
Expect the panels, lamps, badges and interior trim to carry Porsche numbers, even on a Cayenne or a Macan. Those are the parts that make the car look like a Porsche, and the least likely to have an Audi or VW twin.
The same goes for anything tied to a Porsche option package. Two Macans of one year can take different parts because of their equipment, so a number copied from an Audi Q5 of the same era proves nothing until the Porsche catalog lists it.
PET numbers and ETKA numbers
Porsche parts live in PET, not ETKA. A Porsche-designed part carries an eleven-character Porsche number, and our PET guide walks through the format with 991 351 045 00. A part taken from an Audi or VW can keep its Group number, the three-three-three pattern with a letter suffix, as the 8R0 flange does. Porsche orders it under that number.
How to check a Porsche part against Audi or VW
Enter the Porsche VIN in Porsche PET and read the number off the diagram. An eleven-character Porsche number means a Porsche part. An Audi or VW prefix such as 8R0 means a Group part, so search that number in ETKA to see which Audi or VW models list it.
With a Cayenne and a Touareg of the same era side by side, compare the numbers line by line. The two can share one component and differ on the next, so check every line of the job, not just the first.
Frequently asked questions
Is the Porsche Cayenne a VW Touareg?
The first three Cayenne generations share a platform with the Touareg, PL71, PL72 and then MLB Evo, and the Audi Q7 sits on the same base. The electric Cayenne of 2026 moved to PPE. The styling, tuning and many visible parts are Porsche’s, so check each part number.
Is the Porsche Macan an Audi Q5?
The first Macan (95B) is built on the platform of the first Q5, type 8R, and some Macan parts carry 8R0 numbers. The electric Macan of 2024 shares the PPE platform with the Audi Q6 e-tron instead.
Does ETKA cover Porsche?
No. Porsche parts are in PET, Porsche’s own catalog. An Audi or VW number that PET lists for a Porsche can be searched in ETKA to see the other models that use it.
Are Taycan and Audi e-tron GT parts the same?
The two cars share the J1 platform, so some hidden parts can match. Compare the numbers for each VIN before you swap anything.
