Mercedes EPC and Xentry Explained: Parts by FIN

FIN, VIN and why Mercedes uses the other word

Mercedes documentation says FIN where most of the industry says VIN. It is the German term, Fahrzeug-Identifizierungsnummer, and it means the same 17 characters standardised under ISO 3779.

There is no conversion to do and nothing to translate. If a Mercedes system asks for a FIN, type the VIN.

Reading an A-number

Mercedes part numbers open with a letter that tells you what kind of part it is. A marks a current service part, Q covers accessories and consumables, N is used for standardised fasteners. After the letter come three digits of model series, three of assembly group and four identifying the part itself.

In A 205 820 15 01, the 205 is the W205 C-Class and 820 is the electrical and lighting group. Once that structure is familiar you can often tell which car and which area a loose number belongs to before you look it up.

Equipment codes decide the answer

Mercedes builds an unusual amount of variation into the same model. Option packages change wiring, cooling, seats, brakes and suspension, and two cars of the same year and body can take different parts throughout.

The catalog reads those codes from the FIN, which is why the lookup is reliable and why a search by model and year is not. Our guide on the Mercedes data card and SA codes explains how to read the equipment list itself.

Where the diagram matters more than the number

Mercedes assemblies often include clips, seals and small brackets that are easy to overlook when quoting a job, and those are exactly the parts that hold up a repair when they turn out to be missing.

The exploded diagram shows them with fitted quantities. Reading it properly before you order is a habit worth building; how to read an exploded parts diagram covers the technique.

Frequently asked questions

Is FIN the same as VIN?

Yes. FIN is the German term for the same 17-character identifier standardised under ISO 3779. Enter the VIN when a Mercedes system asks for a FIN.

What does the letter at the start of a Mercedes part number mean?

A marks a current service part, Q accessories and consumables, N standardised fasteners. The digits that follow give the model series, assembly group and the part.

Why do two identical-looking cars take different parts?

Mercedes builds heavy option variation into the same model. The equipment codes attached to the FIN decide which version the car actually takes.
