Jaguar and Land Rover Parts by VIN: Reading JLR Numbers

Telling the two number formats apart

Land Rover numbers open with LR followed by six digits, like LR079532. That prefix is a gift when a number arrives on a scrap of paper with no context, because it names the manufacturer before you search anything.

Jaguar numbers of the same era look different: a letter, a digit, another letter, then four or five digits, as in C2D3670 or T4A44875. Once you have seen both shapes you can sort a pile of numbers by badge without opening a catalog.

Why the VIN matters more here than on most cars

Land Rover in particular builds heavy specification variation into the same model. Air suspension or coils, different axles, several drivetrain configurations, and market-specific emissions hardware all sit under one model name.

A Discovery of one model year can take genuinely different parts from another built weeks later. The catalog resolves that from the VIN, which is why starting there rather than with the model and year is worth the extra few seconds.

Long-lived models and long supersession chains

Defenders and Discoverys stay on the road for decades, and numbers from the 1990s still circulate on forums and in old invoices. Many have been replaced two or three times since.

The catalog walks the chain and shows what ships today. Ordering a middle link sometimes still finds stock, and that stock will be the design the factory moved away from.

Where TOPIx fits

TOPIx is the portal JLR uses to deliver technical information to workshops, and parts data reaches the trade through it. The distinction matters if someone tells you TOPIx is the parts catalog: it is the doorway, and the catalog is what you find behind it.

For parts identification the diagram and the number are what you need, and a VIN lookup gives you both. Our guide on finding a part number covers the habit applied to any manufacturer.
