Peugeot engine codes: EB2, EP6, DV6, DV5, DW10 and the three-character type code
Family name and type code
PSA names its engines by family. EB is the three-cylinder petrol family sold as PureTech, EP is the four-cylinder petrol family PSA developed with BMW, and DV and DW are diesel families. The characters after the family name mark the version, as in EB2DT, EB2DTS or DW10BTED4.
The type code is three characters long, and catalogs pair it with the family name. Wikipedia’s DW10 table does the same, with DW10 TD next to RHY and DW10 BTED4 next to RHR.
Peugeot engine codes for the petrol engines
The EB2 is a 1,199 cc three-cylinder. NTN-SNR lists HNZ for the EB2DT with 110 hp and HNY for the EB2DTS with 130 hp, along with the later EB2ADTD at 100 hp and EB2ADTX at 155 hp. The 1.2 Hybrid engine appears in MANN-FILTER’s catalog as HPY (EB2LTDH2).
The EP6 is a 1,598 cc four-cylinder from the Prince family. The plain EP6 and EP6C are listed at 72 to 88 kW, and the EP6DT and EP6CDT at 103 to 120 kW, so the suffix separates engines of different output. Our post on the MINI and Peugeot engine picks up the BMW side of that family.
The diesels: DV6, DV5 and DW10
The DV family is shared with Ford, which calls it DLD, and with Mazda, which calls it MZ-CD or CiTD, so one engine family turns up under three names. The DV6 is the 1,560 cc 1.6 HDi, and MANN lists 9HX for the DV6ATED4 at 90 hp and 9HY or 9HZ for the DV6TED4 at 109 hp.
The DV5 is the 1,499 cc 1.5 BlueHDi. In MANN’s list YHY is the DV5RD at 102 hp, YHX the DV5RC at 120 hp and YHZ the DV5RC at 131 hp.
The DW10 is the 1,997 cc diesel that brought common rail to PSA under the HDi name. RHY is the DW10TD at 90 PS, and RHR is the DW10BTED4 at 136 PS.
One family name can hide two engines
The DV5 shows why the type code earns its place. MANN lists the DV5RC under two type codes, YHX at 120 hp and YHZ at 131 hp, so the family name alone leaves the version open.
It works the other way too. MANN lists the Peugeot 207 1.6 HDi 110 with two engines over overlapping years, the DV6TED4 at 109 hp and the DV6CTED at 112 hp. The badge on the tailgate reads the same, and the engine parts can differ.
One type code can also span two outputs. HPY covers both the 136 hp and the 145 hp versions of the 1.2 Hybrid in the Citroën C3 Aircross.
Opel and Vauxhall versions
PSA engines in Opel and Vauxhall models can carry Opel codes. MANN lists the 1.5 diesel in the Crossland X and the Corsa F as D15DT, with DV5RD in brackets, so a Vauxhall invoice may name the same engine differently from a Peugeot one.
Where to find the Peugeot engine code
On PSA VINs built from 2009, positions 6 to 8 hold the engine type code, so the three characters often sit in the VIN itself. Our Peugeot VIN decoder walks through an example with RHR. If the code in the VIN and the engine in the car disagree, the engine may have been changed, and the parts have to match the engine that is fitted now.
The engine carries its own identification as well, and our post on engine code by VIN explains why the stamp on the block beats a sticker on a cover. For ordering, the Peugeot parts catalog reads the engine from the VIN and opens the parts for that version, from the oil filter to the timing kit.
Frequently asked questions
What engine is HNZ?
HNZ is the type code for the EB2DT, the 1.2 PureTech turbo petrol with 110 hp. HNY is the 130 hp EB2DTS.
What is the engine code for the 1.6 HDi?
The family is DV6. MANN lists 9HX for the 90 hp DV6ATED4 and 9HY or 9HZ for the 109 hp DV6TED4, and the DV6CTED at 112 hp also appears in some cars badged HDi 110.
Is the engine code in a Peugeot VIN?
On cars built from 2009, positions 6 to 8 of the VIN hold the engine type code in the PSA layout. Confirm it against the engine and the catalog before you order engine parts.
What does DW10 mean?
DW10 is PSA’s 1,997 cc diesel family, the first PSA diesel with common rail and sold as the 2.0 HDi. RHY is the 90 PS DW10TD and RHR the 136 PS DW10BTED4.
