How to verify authentic Honda OEM parts before they go on the car

Read the Honda part number first

Honda prints most numbers in three groups: five characters, three, then three. 15400-PLM-A02 is the oil filter American Honda specifies in service bulletin 13-082, revised in July 2022, for the 2009 to 2013 Pilot. A painted part adds two more characters for the color. The dashes are only separators, so drop them if a search box refuses them.

The first group names the kind of part. Both spark plugs in that bulletin start 12290: 12290-R70-A01 for the 2009 to 2011 Pilot and 12290-R71-L01 for 2012 and 2013. Same job, different part, and the difference sits in the last two groups.

The middle group is a model code, the car the part was designed for or first used on. One Pilot bulletin lists parts coded R70, PLM, RCA and P8A, so a middle group that names another model is normal on a shared part and says nothing about authenticity.

Small parts and fluids break the pattern. The 14 mm drain washer in the same bulletin is 94109-14000, and Genuine Honda 5W-20 motor oil is 08798-9032.

What American Honda says about counterfeits

In March 2013 American Honda told its dealers that the US Department of Justice was contacting people who had received counterfeit airbags, advising them to have a dealer inspect the airbag. American Honda wrote that it lacked the ability to say with absolute certainty whether a replacement airbag was counterfeit. It pointed owners to the vehicle’s history as the better first step, since only a car with an earlier repair, most likely after a collision, could have a counterfeit fitted.

That is the carmaker telling you a close look at a fitted part may not settle the question. For airbags the paperwork counts for more than the part, and our post on counterfeit airbags goes through what to ask for.

Why the box proves less than it looks

On October 15, 2024, Delhi Police, working with Honda Motorcycle & Scooter India, seized nearly 14,000 counterfeit Honda parts in Karol Bagh. Hub centers, clutch wires, air filters and chain tensioners were in the haul. So were packaging materials, rolls of counterfeit stickers, branded tape and a packaging sealing machine.

Those were motorcycle parts, and the lesson carries over to cars. Someone with a sealing machine can make a box look factory-fresh. Compare the print with a box you know is genuine, then move on to the number and the seller.

Verify authentic Honda OEM parts against your VIN

Decode the VIN in the Honda catalog, open the diagram for the part and read the number Honda lists for that build. Compare it with the label character by character. A number that shares the first group but not the rest belongs to another car or another year, like the two Pilot spark plugs above.

Then look at the part itself. The number is usually stamped or labeled on the component too, on an alternator case or a belt tensioner bracket for instance. A number on the metal that disagrees with the box is a reason to send it back.

If the label’s number appears nowhere for your car, stop there. VINsearch opens the Honda catalog for Honda and Acura by VIN, with the other catalogs on the same login, and our Honda EPC guide shows how its diagrams and supersessions read.

Buy where the history is known

Buy from an authorized Honda or Acura dealer, at the counter or through the dealer’s online store, and keep the receipt. American Honda warrants Honda and Acura parts bought online from an authorized dealer and fitted elsewhere for 12 months from the date of purchase.

A marketplace listing with a Honda box and a price well under the dealer’s gives you none of that. You can check its number. You cannot check its history.

Frequently asked questions

How can I tell if a Honda part is genuine?

Buy from an authorized Honda or Acura dealer, then confirm the label number is the one the Honda catalog lists for your VIN. Packaging alone is weak evidence.

What do the three groups in a Honda part number mean?

The first five characters name the kind of part, the middle three the model it was designed for or first used on, and the last group the version and supplier. Painted parts carry an extra two-character color code.

Why does my Honda part show another model’s code?

Honda keeps the code of the model a part started on when later cars reuse it. The 2009 to 2013 Pilot, for example, takes an oil filter coded PLM.

What warranty comes with genuine Honda parts?

American Honda covers Honda and Acura parts bought online from an authorized dealer, and installed elsewhere, for 12 months from the purchase date.
