EPC light meaning: the Electronic Power Control warning on VW, Audi, Škoda and SEAT

The EPC light meaning on Volkswagen Group cars

Most drivers meet the amber EPC lamp on Volkswagen Group cars. It covers the electronic control of engine power: the drive-by-wire throttle, the accelerator pedal sensor and the signals the engine control unit uses to decide how much power to give you.

Other carmakers label this kind of fault in their own way. The Hyundai owner’s manual we checked lists a malfunction indicator lamp for engine and powertrain faults and no EPC lamp, so read the warning-light page of your own manual before you assume the VW meaning.

Reduced power and limp mode

If the fault is serious enough, the engine control unit limits power and acceleration to protect the engine and the driveline. Drivers call this limp mode. The car still moves, but it may accelerate slowly or not respond fully to the pedal.

In limp mode the car can also lose top speed, and some systems such as the stability control may switch off until the fault is cleared.

The lamp can also come on with no change in how the car drives. The fault is stored either way, and the absence of power loss does not mean the problem has gone.

Common causes behind an EPC warning

The EPC lamp names a system, not a part. Diagnostic tool makers and repair guides list these as frequent causes:

  • A dirty or failing throttle body.
  • A faulty accelerator pedal position sensor or throttle position sensor.
  • A faulty brake light switch or brake pedal sensor, which the engine control unit also reads.
  • Wiring and connector faults in any of those circuits.
  • Misfires from worn spark plugs or ignition coils, and a faulty crankshaft position sensor.

What to do when the EPC light comes on

Get the car diagnosed. A scan of the engine control unit reads the stored fault code and points to the circuit involved, and guessing at parts without it wastes money. Codes often seen with the EPC lamp include P2120 and P2138 for the pedal position sensor circuits and P0120 for the throttle position sensor, though the list varies by engine. If the car loses power while you drive, pull over where it is safe and arrange for it to be checked.

Clearing the code without fixing the cause brings the lamp back. Treat the EPC light as a reason to book a diagnosis soon, and follow the advice in your owner’s manual for your model.

After the diagnosis: getting the right part

Once the scan points to a component, the part has to match the car. Throttle bodies, pedal sensors and brake light switches split by engine and build, and a close match can bring the lamp straight back. If the scan points to misfires, our post on spark plugs by VIN shows how to find the right plug.

The Volkswagen Group catalog, ETKA, decodes the VIN to the exact build and lists the genuine part number for that car. On VINsearch you can open it from the Volkswagen catalog or the Audi catalog.

EPC as a parts catalog: the other meaning

In the parts trade, EPC stands for electronic parts catalog, the manufacturer’s database of parts, part numbers and exploded diagrams for each VIN. It has nothing to do with the warning lamp, and it cannot read fault codes. Our guide on what an EPC catalog is covers that meaning.

In the workshop the two meanings meet on the same job. The scan tool and the fault code tell you which component has failed, and the electronic parts catalog tells you which part number fits the VIN in front of you, with any supersession the maker has applied since the car was built.

Frequently asked questions

What does the EPC light mean?

EPC stands for Electronic Power Control. On Volkswagen, Audi, Škoda and SEAT cars it means the engine management system has found a fault in the electronic control of engine power, such as the throttle or accelerator pedal sensor.

Is it safe to drive with the EPC light on?

Have the car diagnosed soon. The engine control unit may limit power, and if the car loses power while driving, pull over where it is safe and arrange for it to be checked. Follow the advice in your owner’s manual.

Can a brake light switch turn on the EPC light?

Yes. The engine control unit reads the brake light switch, and a fault in it is one of the commonly reported causes. A diagnostic scan confirms whether it is the cause on your car.

Do Hyundai and Kia cars have an EPC light?

The EPC lamp is best known as a Volkswagen Group warning. The Hyundai owner’s manual we checked uses the malfunction indicator lamp for engine and powertrain faults, so check the warning-light page in the manual for your model and year.
