BMW build sheet by VIN: the vehicle order, the catalog and BMW Group Classic

Inside a BMW build sheet

BMW calls the record the vehicle order. It holds the type code, which identifies the model, along with the production date and the factory option codes. BMW’s coding software reads all three when it calculates a control unit’s factory settings.

A catalog decode of the same VIN adds the plant, the paint code and the upholstery code. In BMW’s 2022 price list for the 3 Series Touring, paint codes run to three characters, such as 475 for Saphirschwarz and A96 for Mineralweiß, and upholstery codes to four, such as KHSW for black perforated Sensatec.

BMW build sheet by VIN from the parts catalog

For parts work the fastest route is the catalog. Enter the VIN in BMW ETK and it opens with the vehicle data: model, engine, production date, paint, upholstery and the list of option codes. Every diagram you open after that is filtered by the build.

The VIN on its own carries little of this. Many European BMWs show a 0 in position 10, so even the year of a European car comes from the build record behind the VIN.

BMW dealers look parts up in ETK by VIN as well, so the record you read there matches what the dealer’s parts counter sees. Our guide to BMW option codes explains what codes such as 337 and 704 do to the parts list.

BMW Group Classic for older cars

For a classic, BMW Group Classic issues a birth certificate. It records the chassis and engine numbers and the production and delivery dates. For cars built from the 1980s onward it adds the transmission number and the options ordered from the factory.

BMW moved the certificate to a digital format in 2024, priced at €125 at launch, with a digital signature against forgeries. You apply with proof of ownership and photos of the chassis and engine numbers, and the amount of detail depends on the model and the car’s age. On a restoration, the certificate tells you what the car had when new, which matters once decades of owners have swapped wheels, seats or even the engine.

Production date and model year are two different dates

The build sheet gives a production date. The VIN of a North American BMW gives a model year in position 10, and the two can sit a year or more apart. The E90 3 Series sedan went into production in December 2004 and launched in March 2005 as a 2006 model.

The catalog applies BMW’s running changes by production date. Order by model year alone and you can land on the wrong side of a change, which our post on model year vs production date walks through.

Window stickers, reprints and the vehicle order

BMWs sold new in the United States also carried a window sticker, the federal price and equipment label covered in our post on window stickers and build sheets. It names packages the way a buyer sees them. The vehicle order lists the codes behind those names, and the codes are what the parts catalog reads.

Paid build sheet sites sell reprints and option lists by VIN. Check anything from them against a catalog decode before you order a part on its strength, since a list that looks complete can describe a sister car.

Frequently asked questions

How do I get a BMW build sheet by VIN?

Decode the VIN in BMW’s parts catalog, ETK, which shows the production date, paint, upholstery and option codes. For older cars, order a birth certificate from BMW Group Classic.

What is on a BMW build sheet?

The type code, the production date, the plant, the paint and upholstery codes and the factory option codes.

Does BMW Group Classic provide build information?

Yes. Its birth certificate lists the chassis and engine numbers and the production and delivery dates, and for cars from the 1980s onward the transmission number and factory options. The digital version cost €125 when it launched in 2024.

Is the production date the same as the model year?

No. A BMW can be built months before its model year starts. The E90 3 Series sedan entered production in December 2004 and sold in North America as a 2006 model.
