EVs Out of Warranty: What Reaches an Independent Workshop Now

The clock started at first registration, and nobody told the second owner

This is the conversation to get right, because it decides who pays and it comes up before anyone has touched a spanner. Cover runs from the date the car first went into service. It does not reset when the car changes hands, and it does not extend because the second owner has only had it two years.

The practical effect on a used EV is severe. Somebody buying a 2018 car in 2024 got two years of battery cover, not eight, and a good number of them did not realise that at the time. In 2026 they have none. When a warning light appears, the assumption in the room is that the manufacturer is going to deal with it, and the first person to correct that assumption is usually the workshop.

Get the in-service date off the registration document before the conversation goes any further. It takes a minute and it saves an argument later.

What expired, and in what order

Three separate periods run at once and people collapse them into one word. Basic vehicle cover is the shortest, typically three to four years, and on a 2018 car it went years ago. Powertrain cover sits in the middle at five years on several brands. High-voltage battery and drive unit cover is the long one at eight years, and that is the boundary being crossed right now.

Tesla covers the battery and drive unit for eight years with a mileage cap that depends on trim, so a Model 3 that went into service in March 2018 reached that mark in March 2026. Nissan applies the same eight-year period to the Leaf battery, which puts the 2010 to 2017 cars fully outside cover already.

The years are only half of it. Cover ends at whichever comes first, years or miles, and the mileage cap is not identical across trims. A car doing motorway miles can be out of cover well before the date suggests, which is worth confirming rather than assuming.

What the capacity clause actually promises

The battery warranty usually guarantees a capacity floor, commonly around 70% of original over the cover period. Customers hear that as a guarantee the battery will not fail. It is a different thing.

A capacity floor is a limit on how far normal degradation may go before the manufacturer steps in. It does not address a module failing, a contactor sticking, a coolant leak into the pack, or the thousand ordinary faults that have nothing to do with gradual capacity loss. Those sit under whichever cover applies to the component, and on a 2018 car that increasingly means none.

Worth knowing before the conversation, because the gap between what people believe they bought and what the document says is where the difficult half hour lives.

What actually crosses the counter

The expectation is battery packs. The reality is that most of what arrives is ordinary, and a shop that already fixes cars can fix it.

Eight-year-old cars carrying substantial weight wear their chassis components hard, and regenerative braking creates its own pattern: pads that last far longer than usual while the hardware around them corrodes from lack of use. Seized caliper slides on a car with 20% of the original pad left is a routine EV job and surprises people the first time.

  • Suspension: control arms, bushes, top mounts, links, subframe hardware
  • Brakes: seized slide pins and carriers, discs corroded rather than worn
  • Thermal: coolant pumps, valves, hoses, heat pump components, radiators
  • Charge port assemblies, their latches and their wiring
  • Steering, driveshafts and wheel bearings, worn by weight and torque
  • Body, glass, lighting and interior trim, no different from any other car

Why there is no aftermarket to fall back on

On a fifteen-year-old diesel the routine is automatic. Identify the genuine number, then decide between genuine, an OE-supplier equivalent and a quality aftermarket part, because twenty years of fitment data sits behind that choice.

For an EV the third option frequently does not exist. Aftermarket catalogues are compiled from accumulated fitment records, and for a platform launched in 2018 there is not much to accumulate yet, particularly on anything electrical or high-voltage. Manufacturers have also tightened their side: locked software, encrypted diagnostic protocols and proprietary components are increasingly normal, which slows the independent supply chain further.

So the factory catalog stops being the preferred route and becomes the only one on a large share of these jobs. That is a real change in how the work runs, and it catches out shops that expect to price three options and pick one.

The parts that are the same as the petrol car beside it

This cuts the other way and it is worth knowing, because it is where availability is fine. Plenty of an EV is a car. Where the platform is shared with a combustion model, the wishbones, bearings, glass, lighting, trim and much of the interior are shared with it, and so is the supply.

The e-Golf and the Golf overlap heavily under the skin. Several early EVs from established makers sit on adapted combustion platforms for exactly this reason. Resolving the VIN in the manufacturer catalog is what tells you which side of that line a given part falls on, and it answers the question in seconds instead of a morning of guessing.

Where the catalog stops

Being clear about the boundary saves wasted effort. The parts catalog identifies components: what is fitted to this VIN, its genuine number, how many the assembly uses, and what supersedes what. That covers the ordinary work, which is most of it.

It does not talk to a control unit. Where a component has to be configured, coded or paired after fitting, that is a diagnostic tool, and on high-voltage systems it is also a matter of isolation procedure and qualification. Identifying the right part correctly and then discovering it needs coding you cannot perform is a frustrating place to end up, so establish that at quoting time rather than at fitting time.

What to confirm before you quote

The sequence that holds up is short. Pull the in-service date and settle the warranty question first, because it changes who the customer is. Then resolve the build from the VIN, because early EV production carried running changes that are invisible from the outside and are exactly the kind of thing that produces a wrong part.

Then check two things about the part itself: whether an equivalent exists at all, and whether fitting it requires configuration. Those two answers decide whether the job is yours, and both are cheaper to establish now than after the car is apart.

The jobs worth passing on, and saying so early

Not every job on these cars belongs in a general workshop, and there is no shame in the boundary. Opening a pack, replacing modules, or anything requiring the high-voltage system to be worked live needs qualification, equipment and insurance, and a shop without all three should not be talking itself into it.

What is worth taking is everything else, which is the large majority. A shop that can identify parts accurately on these cars picks up the suspension, brakes, thermal and body work that a growing parc generates, refers the pack work on, and keeps the customer. Turning the whole car away because the drivetrain is unfamiliar gives away eight years of ordinary servicing.

Count from the date the car first went into service, not from when you bought it.
