Volvo VIN decoder: YV1, YV4, the Chinese and US codes, and the plant

Volvo VIN decoder: the first three characters

NHTSA’s register lists YV1 as a Volvo Car Corporation passenger car and YV4 as a multipurpose vehicle, which covers the XC models. A sedan or wagon starts with YV1, an XC90 or XC60 with YV4.

Cars from China carry their own prefixes. NHTSA registers both LVY and LYV to Daqing Volvo Car Manufacturing, LVY for passenger cars and LYV for SUVs. Volvo has built the S60 in China since 2013, so do not assume a Volvo is Swedish because of the badge.

7JR and 7JD: Volvos built in South Carolina

Volvo’s first US plant, near Ridgeville outside Charleston, began production in 2018. Its passenger cars carry 7JR and its SUVs 7JD, both registered to Volvo Car USA.

The plant built the third-generation S60 for North America and Europe from 2018 to 2024. It started the electric EX90 in June 2024, and a US-built EX90 carries a 7J prefix where a Swedish XC90 carries YV4.

The 2010 change on North American Volvos

From model year 2010, Volvos for the US and Canada moved their characters around to meet the US rules. The engine code now sits in positions 4 and 5, the emissions code in position 6, the model in position 7 and the trim, restraint system and weight class in position 8. Volvo’s market codes show who gets this layout: 30 and 31 for the US with federal and California emissions, and 39 for European-built cars sold in Canada.

Position 7 is the one to learn first. D is an XC60, F an S60, H an XC40, and C covered the seven-seat XC90 from 2016 to 2022. In positions 4 and 5, L1 is the B5 mild hybrid four-cylinder, while ED marks the all-wheel-drive electric XC40 Recharge and C40 Recharge of 2021 to 2023.

The plant in position 11

1 is Torslanda in Gothenburg, which opened in 1964 and builds the XC90. 2 is Ghent in Belgium, Volvo’s first European plant outside Sweden, which has built the XC40 since 2017 and now builds the EX30 and EC40 as well.

G is the Charleston plant in Ridgeville. B is Chengdu, L is Luqiao in Taizhou, P is Daqing and S is Zhangjiakou, all in China. The plant matters when two cars of the same model come from different continents with different market equipment.

European Volvos and older VINs

The 2010 swap applied to cars for the US and Canada. A Volvo built for Europe follows the international standard, which lets the maker arrange the middle of the VIN and requires no check digit. On older European Volvos, position 9 carried a gearbox code in place of the check digit.

A European XC60 VIN read with a North American chart will return the wrong engine. For those cars, let the catalog decode the build, since it holds the engine and equipment the VIN only points to.

From the VIN to Volvo parts in VIDA

VINsearch opens Volvo’s VIDA parts catalog in the browser. Enter the VIN and VIDA reads the car’s structure, engine and equipment, then shows the diagrams and genuine part numbers for that build. The Volvo VIDA parts by VIN guide walks through a lookup.

Check the maker, country and model year first in the free VIN decoder, then open the Volvo VIDA catalog. If you are working on an older Volvo and wonder where the Ford-era parts fit in, read does Volvo use Ford parts.
