smart fortwo 451 or 453: the model code that saves a wrong parts order

Why do 451 and 453 matter?

Mercedes-Benz original-parts listings include smart fortwo vehicles with 451 model designations and parts whose references begin A451. Its smart catalog also lists 453 references. Those digits are useful clues when sorting an old invoice or a photograph, but the complete vehicle designation and VIN still decide fitment.

A number printed on a component is not always the number of the orderable service part. It may be a supplier marking, a subcomponent or a replaced reference. Use the smart EPC page to get to the Mercedes-Benz parts information for the actual car.

What goes wrong at the counter?

A customer arrives with a photo of a mirror housing, window trim or suspension piece and says “fortwo”. The photo may identify the assembly but it cannot reveal every mounting detail, side or revision. A search engine can put 451 and 453 listings beside each other as if they were alternatives.

Start with the full VIN. Check the returned model designation, body style and drive side. In the diagram, read the callout and any left/right or equipment note. Then compare the complete service number with the supplier listing. The work takes less time than returning a painted component.

No assumption about fortwo data should be carried over to smart’s newer #1, #3 or #5 electric models. smart publishes separate current manuals for those cars and asks owners to provide the VIN when ordering genuine parts. The badge survived; the vehicle and parts coverage need their own check.

If a # model does not resolve in the active catalog, make that a coverage question. A similar-looking Mercedes-Benz reference is not evidence of compatibility. Our badge-change article explains why this happens across several brands.

What should you send the supplier?

Send the VIN, resolved Mercedes-Benz model designation, full OEM number and the diagram position. If the listing advertises a part as “451/453 compatible”, ask which exact designations the manufacturer record covers. A supplier answer tied to those identifiers is useful; a promise based on a photograph is weak.

For bodywork, add colour or finish information where relevant. For electrical parts, check the repair procedure for any coding or adaptation after fitting. The catalog identifies the part, while the workshop procedure governs the job.

Frequently asked questions

Will a 451 part fit a 453 smart fortwo?

Do not assume so. Check the exact Mercedes-Benz vehicle designation and part applicability against the VIN.

Where are classic smart parts listed?

Mercedes-Benz original-parts information includes classic smart models. VINsearch’s smart catalog page explains the access route.

Can I identify a smart part from its photograph?

A photograph helps locate an assembly, but the VIN, position, equipment and complete service number are needed for an order.
