The Chinese brands are already in your bay: identifying parts when the badge is new to you

The sub-brand maze is the first thing to learn

European and Japanese groups taught everyone that a badge roughly equals a catalog. The Chinese groups do not follow that rule, and guessing costs time.

Chery is the clearest example. Omoda, Jaecoo and Exeed are Chery Group brands, and their parts numbering follows the Chery scheme rather than each having an independent system. A workshop searching for an "Omoda catalog" as though it were a separate manufacturer will find nothing useful, while the same part sits waiting under the group data.

Great Wall works the same way: Haval, Tank, Ora and Wey are GWM brands sharing the group numbering. Geely spans several marques again. The practical rule is to identify the group before the badge, because the group owns the catalog.

The numbering makes sense once someone explains it

Chinese part numbers look opaque until you see the pattern, and then they become easier to read than most European schemes.

Many follow the Chinese national assembly-group convention, where the leading digits identify the system rather than the model. 3501 is the brake group, 3801 belongs to instrumentation, 1109 is air intake. So a Great Wall number like 3501100-K00 announces itself as a brake component before you know anything else about the car, and the suffix carries the model.

Chery adds a platform prefix instead: T11-3501080 puts the platform first and the group second. BYD prefixes with the brand itself. Once you can read the group digits, a supplier quote either matches the part you asked for or it obviously does not, which is the same quick sanity check a VAG number gives you through its middle block.

Where the real traps are

The first trap is production speed. These manufacturers iterate faster than the European norm, and a running change can land mid-year without any external signal. A part that fitted a car built in March may be superseded for one built in September of the same model year. VIN-level identification matters more here than on a platform that stays still for six years.

The second is market specification. The same nameplate is built for domestic Chinese, European, Middle Eastern, South American and Australian markets with real differences in emissions hardware, lighting, glass and cooling. A part sourced against the domestic version can be physically similar and wrong for an EU-market car.

The third is nomenclature drift. Model names differ by market, and some cars are renamed entirely for export. Searching by name across borders produces confident-looking mismatches, which is exactly the failure mode the VIN removes.

Electric complicates the sourcing question

A large share of this traffic is electric or plug-in hybrid, which shifts the parts conversation. High-voltage components are matched tightly to the build, and battery packs in particular vary by capacity and cell supplier within one model.

BYD is a special case worth knowing about, because it manufactures its own cells and much of its own electronics rather than assembling bought-in modules. That vertical integration means the group catalog is the meaningful source for high-voltage components, and the aftermarket alternatives that exist for a fifteen-year-old diesel simply do not exist here yet.

The practical consequence is that identification accuracy matters more and improvisation is less available. Getting the number right from the manufacturer data is not a preference on these cars; it is usually the only route.

What a shop should actually do about it

Stop treating these as exotic. They are ordinary cars with an unfamiliar filing system, and the filing system is learnable in an afternoon.

Capture the VIN at check-in as you would for any vehicle, identify the group rather than the badge, and read the assembly-group digits so a quote can be sanity checked before money moves. Where a customer asks whether you "do" their brand, the honest answer for most workshops is yes for mechanical work and identification, with the usual caveat about high-voltage qualifications on the electric models.

The shops that started saying yes to these cars two years ago now have a service base their competitors are still deciding whether to compete for. That is the actual commercial point.
