Mercedes VIN decoder: WDD, W1K, 4JG and what the middle of the VIN means
Mercedes VIN decoder: the first three characters
The World Manufacturer Identifier tells you who built the car and, at Mercedes, what kind of vehicle it is. WDB is the long-running code for Mercedes-Benz passenger cars, used from the Daimler-Benz years onward. WDD also covers passenger cars and WDC covers the SUVs.
Newer cars carry codes that start with W1. W1K is a Mercedes-Benz passenger car and W1N an SUV, and NHTSA’s register lists both under Mercedes-Benz. Vans have their own codes, such as W1V for a Mercedes-Benz van, so a Sprinter or a Vito does not share the car prefix.
4JG and 55S: Mercedes built in Alabama
Mercedes-Benz U.S. International has built cars near Vance, Alabama, since 1997. Its SUVs carry 4JG and its passenger cars carry 55S. The plant builds the GLE, the GLE Coupe and the GLS, and since 2022 the EQE SUV and EQS SUV as well.
The 55S prefix turns up on the C-Class, because Vance built the C-Class for North America from 2015 to 2020. A C-Class from those years can start with 55S or with WDD depending on the plant, and position 11 confirms it: A, B and U mean Vance on a 4JG or 55S VIN.
Positions 4 to 8 on a North American Mercedes
US rules make the manufacturer encode the model, body, engine type and restraint system in positions 4 to 8, and Mercedes uses position 4 for the model series. W is the W205 C-Class, A the W206 C-Class that replaced it, and Z the W213 E-Class. Position 5 is the body: F for a sedan, J for a coupe, K for a cabriolet or roadster.
Positions 6 and 7 name the model within the series. On a W205 sedan, WF4J decodes to a C300 of 2015 to 2018 and WF4K to a C300 4Matic of the same years. Position 8 describes the restraint system on cars and the weight class on SUVs, position 9 is the check digit and position 10 the model year.
The plant letter in position 11
Mercedes spreads its German plants across several letters. A to D and U point to Sindelfingen, F to H to Bremen and J or K to Rastatt. N and P mean Kecskemét in Hungary, W means Aguascalientes in Mexico and X means the Magna Steyr plant in Graz, Austria.
The plant matters for parts because two cars of the same series can come from different lines with different running changes. Order against the plant the VIN names, and let the catalog apply the changes that belong to it.
European Mercedes VINs carry the chassis number
A car built for Europe follows the international standard, which leaves the middle of the VIN to the manufacturer and requires no check digit. Mercedes fills it with the model series you already know from the workshop. A W205 C-Class reads WDD205, and a W213 E-Class reads WDD213, with the next characters naming the body and engine variant.
The American tables above do not apply to those cars. Read WDD205 with a North American chart and you will get nonsense for position 4. Our guide on how to read a VIN explains why the two standards differ.
The options the VIN leaves out
The VIN tells you the series, the body and the plant. It does not list the options, and on a Mercedes the options decide a lot: headlamp type, seats, suspension, trim codes. Those sit on the data card as SA codes, which our guide to the Mercedes data card and SA codes walks through.
VINsearch opens the Mercedes-Benz parts catalog in the browser. Enter the VIN and the catalog reads the car’s build, then shows the diagrams and genuine part numbers that fit it. The free VIN decoder gives you the maker, country and year first, and the Mercedes-Benz catalog takes it from there.
Frequently asked questions
What does WDD mean on a Mercedes VIN?
WDD is a World Manufacturer Identifier for Mercedes-Benz passenger cars. SUVs use WDC, and newer cars use W1K for passenger cars and W1N for SUVs.
Where was my Mercedes built if the VIN starts with 4JG?
4JG and 55S belong to Mercedes-Benz U.S. International near Vance, Alabama. 4JG covers the SUVs, such as the GLE and GLS, and 55S the passenger cars.
Does the Mercedes VIN show the model?
Yes. On North American cars, position 4 is the series and positions 6 and 7 the model, so WF4J is a C300 sedan of 2015 to 2018. On European cars, the chassis number follows the prefix, as in WDD205 for a W205 C-Class.
Can a Mercedes VIN tell me the options?
No. Options are listed as SA codes on the data card. The parts catalog reads the build behind the VIN and filters parts to it.
