Are Infiniti parts the same as Nissan? Often, with a few exceptions
Are Infiniti parts the same as Nissan parts by design?
Nissan launched Infiniti in North America on 8 November 1989. From the start the range drew on Nissan models, and the G35 that won Motor Trend Car of the Year in 2003 was based on the Nissan Skyline.
On VINsearch, Infiniti opens in Microcat on the same Nissan data as the Nissan range, with part numbers in Nissan’s two-block format. A part that fits both brands carries one number, so you can compare an Infiniti and a Nissan line by line.
Verified Infiniti and Nissan pairs
Nissan’s FM platform, which debuted in 2001, is the clearest case. It places the engine behind the front axle line for close to 50:50 weight distribution, and it sits under the Z cars as well as several Infiniti lines. Infiniti also renamed its range in 2013, when the QX56 became the QX80, so older paperwork can name the same car differently. The pairings below come from the platform records for each model:
- Infiniti Q50 and Nissan Skyline: the Q50 (2013 to 2024) is the export model of the V37 Skyline sold in Japan. Early cars used the VQ37VHR V6, and the VR30DDTT twin-turbo V6 arrived in 2016.
- FM platform: the Nissan 350Z and 370Z and the Skyline V35, V36 and V37 share it with the Infiniti G, M, Q50, Q60, FX and EX/QX50.
- Infiniti QX80 and Nissan Patrol or Armada: the first QX56 (2004 to 2010) was based on the first Armada. From 2011 the QX56, renamed QX80 for 2014, shares its body with the Y62 Patrol, and the 2017 Armada moved onto the same body. The QX80 from 2024 is related to the Y63 Patrol and Armada.
The Mercedes-Benz exceptions
Two Infinitis break the Nissan pattern. The QX30 (2016 to 2019) is based on the first-generation Mercedes-Benz GLA and its MFA platform, built at Nissan’s Sunderland plant with engines assembled in Germany. The Q50 offered a 2.0-litre turbocharged Mercedes-Benz M274 engine from 2016 to 2019.
On those cars, a Nissan part is no guide to the Mercedes-derived hardware. Start from the Infiniti VIN, and if you need to trace a component back to its Mercedes-Benz source, the Mercedes-Benz catalog is on the same login.
Which parts cross and which stay Infiniti
On an FM-platform pair or a QX80 and Patrol of the same generation, engine parts, service items, suspension hardware and many brake parts can carry the same Nissan number. The market and the engine can still split a part number, so a shared platform tells you where to look and the VIN tells you what fits.
Grilles, lamps, bumpers, badges and interior trim follow Infiniti’s own design. Audio, navigation and control modules often differ too, and a swapped module may need programming, which comes from diagnostic tools rather than the parts catalog.
How to check an Infiniti part against a Nissan by VIN
Confirm both VINs in the free VIN decoder, then open each car in the catalog: the Infiniti catalog for the Infiniti and the Nissan catalog for the Nissan. Find the same assembly on both diagrams and compare the numbers.
The same number on both VINs means the same part. A different number, even by one character in the second block, means a different part or a later revision, so order against the VIN of the car you are fixing.
Frequently asked questions
Is the Infiniti Q50 a Nissan Skyline?
Yes. The Q50 is the export model of the V37 Nissan Skyline sold in Japan. Mechanical parts often match, while trim and some electronics can differ by market.
Is the QX80 the same as a Nissan Patrol?
From 2011 the QX56, later QX80, shares its body with the Y62 Patrol, and the current QX80 from 2024 is related to the Y63 Patrol and Armada. Check each part by VIN, since market specifications differ.
Does the Infiniti QX30 use Nissan parts?
Mostly not for the mechanical side. The QX30 is based on the first-generation Mercedes-Benz GLA, so its platform and engines come from Mercedes-Benz.
Do Infiniti and Nissan use the same part numbers?
Yes. Both brands use Nissan’s numbering in the same catalog data, so a shared part shows one number for both VINs.
