How to verify a part fits before you order it

Verification beats inspection

You can’t inspect a wrong part back into being right at goods-in — by then it’s already cost you. Verification happens earlier and cheaper: a quick check against the catalog before the order leaves. It feels like a delay; it replaces a much longer one.

The five-point check

Run these before every order:

  • Build match — does the decoded build (engine, trim, market) match the car?
  • Quantity — does the diagram say one, or several?
  • Kit or loose — is the number you’re ordering still supplied that way?
  • Market and date — any “up to chassis” or region note?
  • Supersession — is this the current number?

Where each check catches an error

Build match catches the variant slip. Quantity catches the clip-and-bolt undercount. Kit-vs-loose catches the discontinued loose number. Market and date catch the region and running-change traps. Supersession catches the old-box order. Five quick looks, five common failures closed.

Make it the last step, always

Put verification at the end of every lookup, on every part, including the easy ones. The order you’re most sure about is the one you’re most likely to fumble from memory. Fifteen seconds, every time, is the cheapest insurance the parts desk has.

Frequently asked questions

How do I check a part fits before ordering?

Run a five-point check against the catalog: build match (engine/trim/market), quantity, kit-vs-loose, market/date notes, and supersession. It takes about fifteen seconds and catches most wrong parts.

Isn’t checking every order a waste of time?

No — it replaces a much longer return. The order you’re most confident about is often the one quoted from memory, which is where errors hide. Verify every time.

What’s the most overlooked verification step?

Supersession. Ordering the number off an old box or invoice without checking whether it’s been replaced is a leading cause of wrong parts.
