Oil and fluid specifications by VIN: why the approval matters more than the viscosity

Viscosity is not a specification

A grade such as 5W-30 describes flow behaviour at low and high temperature. It says nothing about the additive package, the sulphated ash content, or whether the oil protects a chain driven engine with a variable valve timing system under high load.

Manufacturer approvals cover that. Volkswagen Group specifications such as 504 00 and 507 00, BMW Longlife categories, Mercedes-Benz sheet numbers such as 229.51, Porsche, Renault and Ford specifications all define performance requirements that a grade alone does not.

An oil that carries the approval has been tested against it. An oil that says "meets or exceeds" without carrying the approval has not, and in a warranty conversation that distinction is the whole argument.

Low SAPS, particulate filters and the damage that takes months to appear

Diesel particulate filters and petrol particulate filters are sensitive to the ash left behind when oil is burned. Manufacturers therefore specify low SAPS oils, meaning reduced sulphated ash, phosphorus and sulphur, for vehicles fitted with them.

Fill a car that requires low SAPS with a conventional full SAPS oil and nothing happens immediately. The engine runs normally. Ash accumulates in the filter over thousands of kilometres, regenerations become more frequent, and eventually the filter blocks in a way that cleaning cannot recover.

The customer experiences that as an expensive failure long after the service that caused it, which is precisely why it is worth getting right at the counter. The oil that costs a few units more is cheaper than the filter it protects.

Gearbox, transfer case and differential fluids

Automatic transmissions are the area where generic fluid causes the most damage. Modern units are calibrated around the friction characteristics of a specific fluid, and a multi-vehicle product that claims broad coverage may still produce shudder in a torque converter lock-up clutch.

Dual clutch transmissions are stricter again, and wet units use a fluid engineered for the clutch pack material with a filter that is part of the service. Continuously variable transmissions need their own fluid without exception, because the belt or chain relies on its traction properties.

Differentials and transfer cases add limited slip additives and specific viscosity requirements. A limited slip differential filled with plain gear oil will chatter on tight turns, which customers describe as a noise from the rear and technicians sometimes chase into the driveline.

Brake fluid, coolant and power steering

Brake fluid is specified by boiling point and by viscosity at low temperature. Vehicles with stability control frequently require a low viscosity fluid, often labelled DOT 4 LV or a manufacturer equivalent, so the pump can move fluid quickly on a cold morning. Standard DOT 4 gives a firm pedal and a slower stability system, which is the wrong trade to make silently.

Coolant, as covered elsewhere in this series, is a chemistry decision. Mixing incompatible technologies can gel and block a heater matrix. Colour is dye and is not a specification, however convenient it would be if it were.

Power steering is a smaller trap that still bites. Some systems take a mineral hydraulic fluid such as the green CHF type, some take automatic transmission fluid, and they are not interchangeable because the seal materials differ. Electric power steering, of course, takes nothing at all, which is worth confirming before someone goes looking for a reservoir.

Capacities, intervals and the word lifetime

Fill capacity varies with engine, filter design and whether the system is being drained or flushed. A gearbox drain and fill may take half of what a full service exchange requires, and overfilling an automatic is as damaging as underfilling it.

Service intervals are set by the manufacturer for that build and market, and long life intervals usually assume the approved oil and typical use. Short journeys, heavy loads and high idle hours all justify the severe schedule, which is why fleet vehicles are often serviced more frequently than the handbook default.

When a manufacturer describes a fill as lifetime, read it as the design life of the assembly under warranty rather than a promise about the vehicle. Many independent specialists change those fluids anyway, and the vehicles tend to agree with them.

Is 5W-30 always the same oil?

No. Two 5W-30 oils can have entirely different additive packages and ash content. The manufacturer approval, not the grade, decides whether it belongs in the engine.

What does low SAPS actually mean?

Reduced sulphated ash, phosphorus and sulphur. It exists to protect particulate filters, which accumulate ash from burned oil and eventually block.

Can I use a universal ATF in an automatic gearbox?
